FERS Disability Retirement

Question

Does anyone here on the forum have any experience with FERS disability retirement? Im well verse with SSA since that was my last job as a claims specialist but FERS is different, I know that the criteria they look for is different from SSA, for SSA you have to be completely unemployable including sedentary work, FERS on the on the other hand looks to see why the disabled individual is not able to complete their duties at the position they hold and what accommodations were made if any, would like to know if any other veteran here has had experience with FERS disability retirement

I agree, that the windfall provision is a farce, and if it was not for the VA comp, I would be on skid row.   I have 7 more years until this FERS deal flips, and the offset stops with OPM re-calculating my retirement for 42 years of credit........I do not know how much this will change my retirement, but I expect to gain 1k to 1.3k per month.

You’re talking about reaching the point where it converts to a regular retirement, right?  Yes, google: the chained CPI with the new tax law.  The amount seems trivial over the short term but, over the long haul.  We get screwed again.  This is a done deal too.

Yes Sir, at 62 FERS Flips on the offset.

Chained CPI has been around for a long time now. We get screwed every year on the "CPI" numbers, when the real numbers are 4-5% above what the government really counts.  We just recently went through several years of not getting a COLA, and we all know things we buy everyday was on a continual rise........I think this year we might see 2-2.5% increase, but at least it is something.

The idea of chained CPI has been around awhile now.  However, up until early this year it never was put into place.  The traditional CPI has been the ideal method for making financial determinations (colas)  I don’t like Chained CPI but, it’s necessary to “extend” the longevity of SS.  Obama wanted to install Chained CPI and fail to get it done.  Trump the businessman found away to get it past without throwing up any “Red Flags”.  I’m functioning under similar circumstances as yourself and believe the government has systemically destroy the safe net put into place for all those who’ve paid into SS.  It’s been turned into a welfare fund and habitually abused as such.  Just saying.

is fers the same as ssdi but for federal? and looks like the working limitation is different too? wish there was something for vets who still work to retire out. my work makes great accomadations for me to work still. if i lose this job there is no way i will find another job. im already 100% but i dont think that SSDI would think i am unemployable since i kept working.
