Ssdi taxes single vs married

Rate this question

Question

I've been ssdi since 2016

$1,600.00 a month

Been single and never had to pay taxes....Since 1600 divided by 2 is 800.....800x12=$9,600.00 a year.

9600 is less than 25000 so I've never had to pay taxes

Now possibly getting married.

Possible Spouse makes $63,000.00 a year

My numbers remain the same at 1600 a month (19,200.00 a year)

Will I now have to pay taxes?

How bad will the damage be?

Is there a way to file married but desperate in which I can avoid paying taxes?

I get

1600 tax free ssdi

800 tax free ssdi because I have kids under 18

1865 tax free from VA comp

Last I checked I make right around 4300 take home

But VA compensation and the ssdi for my kids is not computed for tax purposes.

Only the 19,200 a year ssdi is calculated.

I have no other retirements or sources of income.

If I can claim separate and not pay taxes that will be a blessing.

I love her....But I'd hate having to go from paying to taxes to getting taxed just because I want to get married

okay so I will be a bit nosy and maybe put a bee in your bonnet.

why haven't you filed for IU and or an increase to get to 100% schedular?

You don't have to answer me, just consider it for your own income and your kids.

Geeky, it's not being nosy, it's called watching out for our brothers and sisters. Killemall has been around a while with that many posts, but it still is possible that he needs some encouragement to get off the snide. And, I know you often do what a lot of us try to do, and that is to respond to questions in a way that can also be used by others. Your point about benefits for the family is important to always keep in mind. So, no nosy!

thanks for that....in this case I just wanted to make sure he understood that I was not drilling into his business.
