Social Security Disability PLUS VA

Question

Hello,

I have a question that I'm sure the answer is on the forum somewhere but I'm unable to find it. We are going through a very difficult time with my husband who is 50% officially disabled but 100% technically. We are trying to get all his VA paperwork in to hopefully get him to 100%. In the meantime we are in fear of losing our home and getting utilities shut off. My question is, as a disabled vet can he apply for SSI disability? He's 61 and won't quality for normal social security for another year.  Any info would be helpful. I'm ill myself and trying to do the research on this which is difficult.  We need to get some type of income before things get really bad. I know applying takes a while but I need to start anything he might be eligible for. He can't work and can not drive easily. PTSD among other things.

I need to make sure I do things right and don't mess up his VA case...

Thank you!

Nancy

So this just happened. Roy went into his VA psyc doctor this morning for his visit. He goes in once a month per their instructions. He confronted the doctor on needing a letter stating his conditions. The disability people need a doctor letter. Its required. His psychiatrist refused. Said he is not allowed to give a letter for mental disability and no other VA doctor is either. So that means he has to find a normal doctor, which we kinda knew.

Feels like we are being set up to fail. I have no idea what to do. My husband just sold his guitars this morning to make a couple small payments. He's a musician. This is beyond sad.  And we still can't make the house payment.  What a horrific system.

I am concerned at what you posted Monday:

"We are trying to get all his VA paperwork in to hopefully get him to 100%. "

Has a formal claim actually been filed yet?

Is it on the new claims forms?

Is there any possibility that the guy ho was arrested, did file a claim for him?

I hope you realize that it will take time for the VA to even acknowledge his claim.

Maybe one of the IMO/IME doctors listed here , who has expertise in mental health issues would be willing to work with you on payment for an IMO/IME.

If he is eligible for SSDI, that will go faster than his VA claim, and if he does get a SSDI award, that is solely for the conversion disorder(and/or PTSD due to his service ) that SSDI opinion will be worth it's weight in Gold for VA purposes....plus it will garner a SSDI payment to him every month.....

I hope you realize that MANY here over the past 22 years have had to get costy IMO/IMEs for their claims.

I paid 4 thousand for 2, and then paid about 1400 for an additional IMO ( my claim was awarded before I even got that IMO so they refunded about half of my fee) and I felt I didn't even need an IMO at all, with the evidence I had, but it was the best investment I could make.

Your husband needs to be examined by a vocational expert to determine his level of disability. If the vocational expert  opines that he is 100% disabled, that report can be used to help him be awarded disability benefits.

Sorry... i should clarify things more. Yes we have formally filed this past Jan. They told us we have a year to submit the paperwork.

The arrest guy did nothing and left no trail.  His "boss" wouldn't tell Roy anything other than he was no longer there.

Thanks Berta for the additional info. Yeah I know its a slow process. But the advice here helps a lot. Ü

Thanks Charlie. I'll check in on this!

Time is often of the essence when applying for SSDI-as this link shows:

https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/faq/work-requirement-qualify-social-security-disability

It does not pay to wait to apply,  I am not sure if this regards SSI as well.
