New user. I have a service dog that I obtained in 2016 from an organization called K9’s for Warriors. The dogs are sponsored by individuals or organizations at a cost of $15 to $20K, and you pay nothing for them. This program is the largest non profit and I believe they have given out 600 dogs so far. They are housed, trained by the staff, and have all vaccines. The application process is simple and you can download it from their website. The website tells you how they were started and what their future plans are. They are big in DC advocating the use of service dogs, and legislation on fake service dogs. If you are needing a dog for medical issue such as diabetes, seizures, etc. then you will need to look elsewhere.

Ok thank you for this. I've tried to contact a couple local places and have had no luck so far. Just by looking at their website it seems like they do a lot and help lots of veterans. I have contacted them and waiting for a reply

I personally don’t know of any place that doesn’t have a long list but there are non profits that train for PTSD.

The cost is enormous to have one trained.  There is a woman that trains for diabetes over the internet that’s legit.  I think she charges 1500.00.  Some dog training places will train also for a hefty price of 1500-2500.

i would search as Tbird suggested for grants. Sorry I didn’t respond earlier.

    Good Luck

Wow. It is really discouraging what has to happen just to get some relief. From a mobility perspective training my own dog probably won't be a good idea. I don't need a support dog or pet. I know I don't have the money to pay for a trained service dog. My hope rests in finding a grant or finding a VA representative able to help. Definitly need prayers!

Some service dog organizations have dogs that are trained and given freely to veterans. My service dog was funded by a grant by Boeing and they earmarked the money for 2 veterans and I was lucky enough to be one. That was Duo Dogs in St Louis but there must be other organizations around the country that do the same thing. I recommend calling around to places that train service dogs and see if any of them have grant programs.

Thank you. I really need to get in contact with different trainers. There  are so many that sound like willing to help. The VA appears to be in damage control mode and updating policies.

I'm going through the same issues with my disability claims.

Last I heard they (va) we’re doing a research project on giving service dogs.  I don’t know if it even started.

I need a dog for mobility and diabetes. I thought they were trying to add for PTSD but supposedly they were already giving them for mobility and blind. I think finding another doctor is my best option. I like the idea of using my VA benefits but it's miserable going to talk with this jerk.

Are there other options for getting a service dog besides the VA that aren't so expensive?   I don't think I could train my own.

  5. I probably will have to start contacting some accredited trainers and ask them for advice.

The doctor I got when I was in pain told me that there was nothing he could do and I should take up yoga! Asked me what I wanted from him and just stared at me. Told  me there's lots of people in this country who are in pain so suck it up and deal with it. I can't work anymore and they say they aren't allowed to give any sort of pain medication. I figured that I could get some relief from a service dog. It is really frustrating!

I can't afford the $20k+ for a dog trained on my own.

  6. I tried to ask my doctor about it at my VA appointment about  the service dog process and he told me they don't do anything. I need to go to a dog trainer and bring the letter to him and he will sign it.

That link to the website above suggests the doctor will give me a referral and then prosthetics will start the process?

I'm confused and can't find any specific information. Help please
