Greetings. I just got home from spending 4 days in the hospital due to another pulmonary embolism following surgery. The first embolism occurred while active duty following surgery for a broken ankle and the most recent bout following stomach surgery. During stomach surgery, a vein filter was installed temporarily to prevent another PE and was removed 30 days following surgery. So, the filter was removed last Wednesday and I was in the emergency room with a PE on Thursday evening. Doctors do not know the cause of the clot but I am now a lifetime coumadine patient since its considered a reocurring problem.
I have a current total rating of 80% for the following: 50% - sleep apnea; left knee - 10%; right knee - 20%; left ankle - 10%; low back strain - 10%; tinnitus - 10%; acid reflux - 10%. During the initial C&P, I did not get rated for the PE since it was a one-time issue with no further problems. Now, it seems to be a reoccuring problem and I can easily show that it is service connected.
My question to the group is should I go back and make a claim?
How should it be presented to be more beneficial to my case for an increase rating?
What percentage, if any, could I receive?
I have done research, but not sure how it all pieces together and would appreciate any guidance suggestions or inputs.
Thank you in advance and hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Cheers!
