  1. I thought I read somewhere there are extra benefits if you reach 50%. Other than the obvious extra compensation, are there other benefits if you are 50% or greater?

    Thanks

    Tom

    Hi Tom,

You do receive extra benefits at 50%. I'm not sure of them all, but I know free healthcare for non-service connected injuries (in addition to service connected of course) is one of them. The downside is you have to use the VA's healthcare. You can also apply for vocational rehab at, I think, 20%.

  2. Hi squints,... How did it go today? Was it a group session, or one on one?

Sorry it took so long for me to get back on here. I have a tendency of disappearing from social circles not only in life, but online as well.

The first session was rather brief. I met with a psychiatrist who determined there was indeed a stressor and prescribed me some meds, as well as set me up with a psychologist. Meds, and one on one groups for now. But group sessions will come into play later. The meds really knock me on my ass, give me some crazy dreams along with night sweats, cotton mouth and waking up is hard, but I'm still on them.

The psychologist wanted to send me to some camp in NY for a month that he said is really good with helping people, but most likely wouldn't be able to take my dog along. That was the deal breaker for me.

  3. Hi everyone, I'm a Marine Corporal (2002-2006) with a service connected rating of 60%. I've never been a big fan of going to the doctor, and made the mistake of not going for 2 years until everything that I was rated for began not only getting worse, but making me know it constantly.

When in the prescreen for the Dr., the nurse asked me a bunch of questions that I didn't know were related to PTSD until she told me I showed the symptoms and asked me if I'd like to see someone. Initially I decided against seeing a psych, but reconsidered after I admitted to myself that I can't pull myself out of the rut this time. I never doubted PTSD as a real condition. I just thought it only happened to other vets and what was going on with me (irritability, mood swings, and lack of emotion to those close to me to name a few off of the laundry list) was just the jerk I was.

I start this Thursday. Any advice that anyone has on what to expect from the first visit would be much appreciated. I go in to most events on the defensive, weddings, class, family parties, etc. and shut down. It's only worse when I feel like my going on guard is justified.
