The bureaucrats have ways!  "Since that item/service/etc. is not specifically listed in the budget we don't have funds for it" is just one of many. Anytime you give a bureaucrat options, you can bet that the one(s) chosen are not optimum for the applicant.

They love when the word "may" is used as in  "Certain Servicemembers and Veterans may also be eligible for adaptive equipment." or  "VA may provide financial assistance in purchasing adaptive equipment more than once ." It allows them to say "no"

  2. I think it is more like what Chuck is trying to say. Some items that were added in prior years are now pretty much standard equipment. ie. power windows, automatic transmission, air conditioning.

They should however should have to put these changes in writing.I was under the impression that since the VA is Federal, that they can't willy-nilly change programs without it being in writing.I thought the C.F.R's covered everything the government does.

  3. Hello everyone,

I have a question about the auto reimbursement program. My friend is 100% SR Vet that lost his leg in Vietnam. He has received the auto reimbursement for every car that he has bought for the last 20 years. He just bought a new car this year(the last time he used the program was over 8 years ago).He filled out the form 10-1394 in February and now the Va rep in Phoenix is telling him they no longer fund the program. Is this true? Has anyone heard they stopped the program?

  4. My psych meds(effexor) stopped working for me about a year ago.I would go to the doctor about it and all they ended up doing was increasing the amount. It finally got to the point that they had me so doped up that I could no longer function.I was hospitalized in the psych ward three times in hampton va to get this straightened out.I finally moved down to NC to get help at a different hospital. They decided to put me in the mental ward and change my meds back to zoloft and seroquel.I was on zoloft before with good results. This time I started experiencing hallucinations and hearing voices(sounded like an alarm clock radio playing somewhere).Needless to say,I stopped the zoloft and the hallucinations and radio sounds went away.(It was kind of funny trying to find where the radio noise was coming from untill I realized it was in my head.)

Yesterday I went to see my shrink and explained the hallucinations and sounds from taking zoloft. He asked me why I thought it was the zoloft.I told him that I didn't have those problems before zoloft and since I stopped the zoloft, the voices went away.He prescribed me haldol.

I looked up Haldol last night and it looks like it is some pretty bad stuff. It says it is for people with hallucinations.I'm not having hallucinations anymore.

Has anyone on here taken this stuff?

I'm sick of feeling like a guinea pig.I have an appointment next Monday with a different shrink.Should I wait to see him?

  5. I am submitting my claim this week for ptsd. The vso I have said I needed my stressor letter to go with it, so I am finishing that tonight.I'm not sure if it should be hand written or typed. So far everything is hand written.I was planning on typing it tonight.I have to use a friends computer.I do everything else on my phone and it takes forever.Last night,I was reading my medical records..boy does the va like to dance around issues."Are you homeless?".."yes" ....Patient states he likes camping.lol

  6. Skip Were you ever treated for a mental health condition in the service? You need a nexus to service for the depression. If you want to file for PTSD then you need a PTSD DX. Who says you have PTSD? A VA doctor or some kind of shrink needs to DX you and then you have to connect it to your service. Can you do that? It would be easier if your VA shrink would say that your depression was connected to your service. You have years of records saying you have depression. If your shrink says it is connected to service I think you won't have a battle to get SC'ed.

I was diagnosed two years after I left the service by a couple VA shrinks for depression.I was recently dx by the VA for ptsd.

  7. I was at the Vet Center with my Psychologist last week and he brought up the subject of non combat PTSD.

He asked me how I feel about the rule changes.

I think he did it to try to piss me off because he knows how I feel about this subject.

I responded that combat vets should get paid double for their PTSD because they probally

suffer from both combat and non combat PTSD. Is PTSD turning into Boots on the Ground?

    Bill

This is what I was talking about when I said some people on here love to pounce.

So Bill,I guess someone that was repeatedly waterboarded in S.E.R.E training couldn't possibly suffered any long term effects.Only soldiers that were with YOU should apply is what you are saying?

  8. I never filed any claim with the VA.They have been treating me for depression since 1994.I didn't feel the need to file a claim back then. They treated me pretty good.I realize now, that that was a mistake. For the past year,I have been getting all my records together, reading everything I can on filing a claim, spending hours and hours reading BVA decisions.I am going to get a VSO this week and file my claim. After reading on here that I(not the vso) should learn as much as I can because it IS my claim and not all vso's are the same.Any recommendations would be much appreciated on picking a vso.Questions I should ask them.

Again thanks for all the help.

  9. I guess I shouldn't have used the word "irrefutable" lol.The proof is newspaper articles with dates, names and what happened.I was never going to file after I got out in 1992 because the VA in Baltimore treated me pretty good the first few years.I have moved around the country quite a bit since then and have experienced care that is marginal to unacceptable. When I was homeless in Baltimore, they at least treated me with respect and dignity. In Fayetteville,Nc and here in Vegas, they treat you like crap if you are a homeless vet.The only reason for me filing a claim is because I would rather pay a private doc for care.

Like I said before, I have been reading tons on this site, but am reluctant to post because too many people are ready to pounce on you when you ask a question.

  10. First,I want to thank all the posters on this site.I have been reading as much as I can on this site for the past year and have learned so much.

I was finally diagnosed with ptsd from the va.They have been treating me for depression since 1994.My question is should I file for non-combat or combat related depression/ptsd? My stressor for non-combat is easier to prove and is irrefutable.Does it make a difference in benefits which one I file for?

  11. Hello all,

.I'm trying to find out what I need to do to file a claim with VA. I was discharged from the service in Jan 1992.I went to the VA for help in 1994.They never gave me a ptsd screening. They just wrote a prescription for anti-depressants and told me to come back in 3 or 6 mos. After about 11 years of alcohol abuse,I ended up in a homeless shelter in Las Vegas(U.S VETS) for about a year. While I was at U.S VETS,I had to go to a 13 week drug & alcohol class at the VA.The VA did the same thing that they did the first time.Except, instead of giving me an anti-depressants,they gave me anti-psychotic meds.(took them once, that's when I looked to see what the hell they were)They also prescribed xanax for anxiety attacks.I told them I couldn't take the xanax because I'm a recovering addict/alcoholic.They didn't seem to understand.Again they still didn't give me any screening.

I have since moved to North Carolina.I went to the VA(little office near me) about two months ago for depression and my ear.I told the doctor that I haven't left my house since October and I have problems sleeping. The doctor prescribed more anti-depressants(big surprise) and said he would set me up with an appointment in Fayetteville for mental health and an appointment with an ear, nose and throat doctor.I saw the ear doctor two weeks ago.I haven't heard anything about mental health.

Today, I went to the VA(the little office near me). They looked my info up on their computer and two nurses took me into their office. The nurses told me that my file says I suffer from mild depression and that someone at mental health in Fayetteville said I did not have ptsd and that a mental health consult was not needed. The nurses told me that I need to go to Fayetteville to the emergency room for help.

How can a mental health professional diagnose you if they have never seen you?

Any help with what I should do would be greatly appreciated.
