UPDATE ON FY 2006 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)
Two important USDR legislative goals were adopted by the U.S. Senate yesterday, 8 November.
First on a vote of 93-5 and 2 not voting, Senator Nelson's amendment for the elimination of the SBP-DIC offset and moving up the paid up SBP premium to October 1, 2005 was adopted. Voting NO were Senators Allard (Colorado), Coburn (Oklahoma), DeMint (South Carolina), Sessions (Alabama) and Voinovich (Ohio). Senators Corzine (New Jersey) and McCain (Arizona), did not vote on the issue.
Second, Senator Reid's (Democratic Leader from Nevada) amendment to eliminate the phase-in of those Individually Unemployable (IU) was adopted by voice vote.
However, our work is not done. We now will have to unleash a massive grassroots effort to get the U.S. House to accept the Senate version of these two issues.
USDR thanks both Senators Reid and Nelson for their continued leadership on important issues that affect military retirees and their survivors. Please take the time to say thank you to your Senators who supported these two amendments.
