Burlington, Vermont - Senator Bernie Sanders is spreading the word about more federal benefits that will be available to veterans starting this summer, both for active-duty and National Guard personnel.
Vets who enlisted after Sept. 11 can now get more education money under a new GI Bill. Another reform Sanders helped pass will give VA health care access to vets who were denied eligibility because of their incomes.
"The message of today is we are beginning to keep faith with our veterans in both education and opening up the doors of the VA for healthcare," said Sanders, I-Vermont. "We are making progress and hope as many Vermont veterans as possible will take advantage of these very positive changes."
Sanders says the new GI Bill would make going to a Vermont State College essentially free to post-9/11 vets. But that benefit and the new healthcare rules are only available to people who sign up. Visit these websites for more on the new veterans' benefits and health care rules:
