Gerd And Breathing

Rate this question

Question

I have been having periods of shortness of breath. My thought was allergies. My primary care doctor suspects that it is becuase of reflux. I am SC for GERD/IBS. What do I need to do if my breathing problem is related to reflux? Is that a secondary condition?

Yes sir, Vietnam Tanker: he's ordered some breathing tests at the local hospital. BP up a bit. He's not sure about the lower left lung discomfort. He wants to run more tests before he gives me a firm diagnosis. My concern is it's early COPD, complicated by GERD. My dad had it. Smoked like a chimney. The VA diagnosed his breathing problem before symptoms ever kicked it. He was shocked when he read his file. The VA is going to do a sleep test on me because I snore so bad. No date on that. One problem I've found is if you have a lot of little/moderate health problems some doctors tend to dismiss health complaints. I'll keep you guys posted.

On tonights News on NBC they talked about Zetia causing an increase in plaque and heart damage. I asked my Doc for that cause of the advertising that it helped raise good cholesterol. My Doc said outright no you are doing ok on Zocar.

Its almost like you take a med and get shot in the ass from side effects.

BernieB,

I read an article on MSN.com about 1 year ago that said Gerd and snoring can cause the patient to breath acid into their lungs, and that this acid in the lungs can cause COPD and other problems. I believe this is true for me.

I ask my VA doctor if this was possible about the Gerd, snoring, and COPD. She said no. She did quit her job. I am sure you can find the article or a similar opinion if you google search it.

Thanks for the update. With COPD alone, in the early stages; you can live a pretty normal life; although it will change your lifestyle. If you follow the doctors instructions such as diet, updrafts, other medication, staying away from that causes flareups, etc, it will help tremendously, if this indeed this is the diagnosis when he finishes the test. Did they do an x-ray? They can see COPD in an X-ray; most of the time.
