I checked out 181 pages for Michigan. If you were born in 1948 there is a good chance you would die in 1969. Having matched those numbers, it makes me feel lucky to be alive.

December, 1989. Area of Burlington, Vermont.

I'm a city phone tech, but ended up doing pole-climbing work in sub-zero, rural Vermont.

Finding addresses was difficult due to lack of street signs and numbers; people would say "Go to the row of 8 mailboxes where the middle one is painted orange. Turn left where the old Ford truck is up on blocks...etc"

Down a snowy farm road I was surprised to see a handmade sign so took a closer look.

It read, "Dedicated to (soldier's name) KIA Vietnam (Date) '"

The cost of war had been felt in this beautiful, little community.

Still brings tears to my eyes.
