What Did Sp4 E4 (T) And Sp5 E5 (T) Mean In Vietnam?

Hello, I am helping a veteran w/ his claim for EED and am reviewing his service records. Does anyone know what those titles mean?

Also, I am having trouble interepreting some of his medical records/service records. Is there a good site to reference. For ex: I am looking at a 514 C document that has a stamp that says under Report: "VDRL NR" on it and also 71 EVAC HOSP stamped under name of medical facility. Checked off is Ambulatory. So it seems like he was at the 71st Evac hospital on this day in Vietnam, but I can't tell what for.

Any ideas?

Also on his record of assignments it states his principal duty as both casual and cook.

Does anyone know what casual means?

Casual means he was hanging around waiting to be given an assignment to a unit or he was in transit.

VDRL is a lab test for syphilis NR stands for Non Reactive or not a positive test. So he did not have syphilis at that time. SP4 and SP5 are ranks used in the army. SP stands for specialist. The number 4 or 5 indicates his pay grade as in E4 or E5. The specialist ranks are used in place of corporal or sergeant. I don't know what the T stands for but usually it stands for technical.

Technical Sgt. used to be a rank in the WWII army. My old man was a Tech Sgt. That rank is now called a specialist 4 or 5.
