I just got approved for it bud. Your Doc will give you a simple one page form. You will fill it out and submit to the VA. Then a Caregiver Support Specialist will call you and ask you and your wife some questions. Then if you initially qualify, then the VA will contact your Docs and ask them to fill out a form with your Mental and Physical Conditions. Then the VA has a board that will go over what your Docs filled out and see if you qualify. Then the VA will decide what Level you qualify for. I will receive Level 3 which is 2K a month. Level 1 is 500, and Level 2 is 1K a month. Then your wife will be required to complete a 6 hour online course and take a test. Once she completes the course, then the VA will send out a nurse to see how you live, and if you need safety items placed in the home example toilet or shower bar. Once the nurse submits here report to the VA, then your wife will be paid the following month. The Nurse and the VA will review your wife and you every 3 months. Good luck and keep us posted.

Vets from periods before 9/11 don't get this benefit at least not yet. My wife quit her job to stay home with me. We lost $20,000 in income. Due to lucky investments we were able to afford it. I never had a dime growing up and when I finally get some money I become disabled. Wow, my golden years what a gas.

John,

Is there anything in the works to give this benefit to older veterans?

Yes, I have heard DAV talk about it, but I would not hold my breath. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are over pretty much now. Unless we go to war over Ukraine the military budget is going to shrink and I think vets will be forgotten about again until next time.
