Question

i was recently admitted in the va for treatment for about a week to get my meds straightened out and to get my feet back on the ground.

i was on the psychiatric ward and was shocked after talking to the vets there at the number who were homeless.

when they were to be discharged they had no home to go to. one guy was living in his truck, and had no gas money.

before i left i gave what i had to them ,and i will say the v.a. hospital was as kind as they could be,and some of them were admitted for a longer stay on the accohol and drug ward.

but there were people waiting in line to get in with nowhere to live and the stay is very short term about a week to two weeks.

i realized how fortunate i was to have a family, and a home to come home to,as a lot of these guys had nobody and no home.

these guys were very nice people and i tried to encourage them as much as i could.

i will be praying for them

"How many homeless veterans are there?

Although accurate numbers are impossible to come by -- no one keeps national records on homeless veterans -- the VA estimates that 131,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. And approximately twice that many experience homelessness over the course of a year. Conservatively, one out of every three homeless men who is sleeping in a doorway, alley or box in our cities and rural communities has put on a uniform and served this country. According to the National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients (U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness and the Urban Institute, 1999), veterans account for 23 percent of all homeless people in America."
