ssgtob1
Has anyone had any luck with getting student loans forgiven? Do you have to be 100% P&T or just 100%. I have found answers that say both and the paperwork for it just says 100%. Thanks
NavyWife
Here's the link that explains it: https://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation#total-and Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Discharge A TPD discharge relieves you from having to repay a William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program loan, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loan, and/or Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) Program loan or complete a TEACH Grant service obligation on the basis of your total and permanent disability. Before your federal student loans or TEACH Grant service obligation can be discharged, you must provide information to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to show that you are totally and permanently disabled. ED will evaluate the information and determine if you qualify for a TPD discharge. You can show that you are totally and permanently disabled in one of the following three ways: 1.If you are a veteran, you can submit documentation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) showing that the VA has determined that you are unemployable due to a service-connected disability. 2.If you are receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you can submit a Social Security Administration (SSA) notice of award for SSDI or SSI benefits stating that your next scheduled disability review will be within five to seven years from the date of your most recent SSA disability determination. 3.You can submit certification from a physician that you are totally and permanently disabled. Your physician must certify that you are unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that Can be expected to result in death, Has lasted for a continuous period of not less than 60 months, or Can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 60 months
Moderator broncovet Posted October 14, 2014 Moderator Share Posted October 14, 2014 Yes. It was a big hassle, but not so big now, I understand. You have to be P and T, according to this website: http://www.disabilitydischarge.com/home/ You can apply for P and T, if you are not now.
ssgtob1
Yeah but on those pages it also says: 1 - Veterans Affairs Determination: If you are a veteran, you will be considered totally and permanently disabled for the purposes of this discharge if you provide documentation from the VA showing that the VA has determined: You have a service-connected disability, or service-connected disabilities, that are 100% disabling; or You are totally disabled based on an individual unemployability determination. And with P&T I cant work, right?
Moderator broncovet Posted October 14, 2014 Moderator Share Posted October 14, 2014 What you posted does not say you dont have to be P and T. It says that you have to provide documentation of it OR IU. Remember you may be P and T and not really know it. The VA has a secret handshake..that VA knows but others often dont know. Does your VA decision letter say, something to the effect, that "no future exams are scheduled"? That's VA speak for P and T. Also, your decision may say, "Eligibility for Chapter 35 benefits is established". This is also VA speak for P and T. The VA does not like to include the phrase "Permanent and Total" in their decision even when you are P and T. Its often in a "code" or not included at all.
