"Forgotten" money MCCR

If you have recently gotten SC, then you may be eligible for MCCR.  Its Medical Care Cost Recovery.  Example:

You go to VA for medical care, and pay a co payment/deductable on prescriptions for 5 years, and then VA finally decides  to grant you SC.  YOu can recover all the money you spent on deductables by submitting them to MCCR at your VAMC.  Mine is done by the same people who do "needs" processing, where they want you to verify income for copayments and deductables.  Take a copy of your recent decision to your VAMC with you.

If you dont ask, you wont get it.  I think my check was about $700 but it has been a while.

While I could not afford copays at the time, the VA still "took" them.  Whenever I had a tax refund, VA took a chuck, but I got much/all of that back with MCCR.

Good info! I think I got about $250 back when I did this. What's your take on these two reimbursement scenarios?

  1. My VAMC did not retroactively reimburse me for travel to the VAMC for about 5 years worth of visits after I became SC. They said they could only go back 30 days.
  2. I also sought reimbursement of out of pocket deductible and copays for medical treatment at private physicians for conditions that became SC at a later date. I was told they would not reimburse because I chose to go to a civilian doctor and could have went to the VAMC instead

Not sure if it all of this was true or if the VAMC employee was just being lazy.

I wish Allison Hickey was still around. I bet she could have done some investigating to correct these problems.
