Use Of Civilian Phyciatrists

Question

Anyone use a phyciatrist in a non post tramatic stress syndrome claim. Attorney says with my lack of sight, I would be surprised how much it effects other different areas of my life (for example my vision problems effect my social skills, learning, playing sports, etc.) My attorney wants to use a phyciatrist to help further my claim. I said ok until the phyciatrist quoted me $1500.00. Not sure if it's a waste of time and money.

Please no negative feedback necessary !

kookiebean,

I have a similar situation. A stress disorder caused by a medical condition. My angioedema is triggered by airborne substances that are colorless, and I can not tell the smell from non offending smells. I have been ambushed by this condition so many times my medical records are a foot high. The condition is life threatning. I am treated with IV drugs in an ER. If it takes to long to get medical attention the disease will kill me.

I went to a VA shrink and told them I wanted an opinion as to the existence of any associated stress disorder. They gladly wrote favorable reports that I used for SSI and the VA. It did not cost me a penny. They did require that I go through testing and several sessioins with a PHD in clinical psych and two visits to a psychiatrist. They told me in the first visit that they would not write any reports unless I followed through with all the visits and testing.

My point being that the VA sometimes does save some money. In the past I have suggested to other veterans that they try VA docs before spending a lot of money. Several of these vets have also been sucessful using VA docs. I did not specifically tell the docs that I wanted to use the reports for SSI. I just told them I wanted a psych evaluation. They did not fill out forms or address social security directly. They gave me a diagnosis and a GAF score. I forwarded this to the SSA. The SSA scheduled me appointments with their doctors.

MY LAWYER CALLED ME TODAY AND SAID THE PSYCHIATRIST OFFICE CALLED HIM AND SAID IT WILL COST $45.00 TO WRITE A DISABILITY LETTER FOR SOCIAL SECURITY. IS THIS A GOOD THING?

$45 ??? no zeros behind it?? Can't go wrong with that. Bring some of he buzz words with you that VA and SS look for to make sure he put the write up in their terms. Good luck.

We kept our promise and served honorably. Now it is time for the VA to keep their's!

I am not an attorney or VSO and offer my opinions free of charge. Any advice I provide in my posts is from experiences I have had with the VA or I have the knowledge that others have encoutered. I accept no liability for this advice should you chose to follow it.

I'm sorry you are at 100% right?

I'm at 30%, I paid my phyciatrist and I have my second and I think final meeting with her on 12/18/2008. I have another friend at 100% using the same phyciatrist and he had to meetings as well. Very through and helpful. One of the things I had forgotten about was a plane crash on base and how we all had to deal with it, she will add that information to the letter as well.
