Former VA hospital worker pleads guilty to tapping cash box

Posted February 4, 2010 at midnight

FEDERAL COURT

A former employee of the Memphis Veterans Medical Center has pleaded guilty to embezzling $7,763.13 from a Medical Administrative Assistance cash box between January 2007 and August 2008.

Thurman Powers pleaded guilty in a criminal information filed this week in federal court.

He will be sentenced later by U.S. Dist. Judge Bernice Donald.

Powers stole money out of a cash box that was used to reimburse patients for travel to the hospital.

He forged signatures for patients who canceled their appointments, had them canceled or did not show up.
