Former VA hospital worker pleads guilty to tapping cash box

A former employee of the Memphis Veterans Medical Center has pleaded guilty to embezzling $7,763.13 from a Medical Administrative Assistance cash box between January 2007 and August 2008.
Thurman Powers pleaded guilty in a criminal information filed this week in federal court.
He will be sentenced later by U.S. Dist. Judge Bernice Donald.
Powers stole money out of a cash box that was used to reimburse patients for travel to the hospital.
He forged signatures for patients who canceled their appointments, had them canceled or did not show up.
