Chronic Vertigo

Question

Hello, I've had positional vertigo problems in the past ever since a hand grenade exploded close to my position four years ago. One week ago I had an appointment at the V.A. and I noticed that the building was moving, I asked my case manager if she felt the movement of the building and she said no, I was about to exit the building when this happened. I drove home and woke up the next morning feeling like my house was moving but ignored it since I have had episodes of vertigo before. I got to the building where I volunteer at (voc rehab) and felt the same way so I figured that it was positional vertigo kicking in for sure, for one week straight I've felt this way and is not going away. I went to the E.R. at the V.A. and I was prescribed meclizine and it is not working. The doctor told me it might be a viral infection and I do not know what to say or do other than taking the meds because I feel so weak and confused while I'm at home this is so annoying that I cannot take it anymore. The tinnitus in my ears became stronger and sometimes I hear drums beating inside my right ear. I like to have a few beers especially when others buy it to be honest, family members brought a few bottles of wine and beers for the holidays and I haven't had a sip of it due to my dizziness, that's how bad it its.

Has anyone had this before?? I would like to put this to an end and if I'm gonna be like this for the rest of my life I'll put it in my claim, like I said I've had this feeling before, but not so many days in a row and with this intensity, any inputs thanks

There can be many reasons for vertigo.

I've had positional vertigo problems in the past ever since a hand grenade exploded close to my position four years ago "  that could possibly be one cause, even for the tinnitus.

If I were you I would claim both the vertigo and the tinnitus.

Did the explosion cause you to be unconscious?

Do you have a complete copy of your SMRS and military personnel files?

If you have proof of the explosion and your close proximity to it, it is possible a doctor would consider that as a nexus...BUT there are many reasons for vertigo----ear problems, sinus problems, neurological causes...etc etc...viral infections too...

personally I feel you should get a non VA specialist's opinion.,,, and that would get you better treatment and possibly the specialist would prepare an IMO/IME for the claim, stating it is more than likely your vertigo was caused by the explosion...if that is the actual cause.

Were you treated at all for this while in the service?

Have you had any audio exams since leaving the service?

I have a vestibular disorder, actually two......menieres and my migraines have a vestibular component that  both cause dizziness/vertigo and the ringing in the ears/ear fullness.  Of course when I was active duty the first time it happened they thought it was a eustachian tube problem, which it wasn't.   You need to see an ENT and a NEURO at the least, have audiology run tests and ask the ENT or NEURO to send you for VRT testing as well as balance/fall risk assessment.  I hope for your sake it is the ear infection and goes away.  I have had it off and on with long periods of no issues for over 15 years and then the last two it has become a 90% of the time issue.

I agree...VA misdiagnosed my husband's spells of vertigo, first as inner ear infection and then as a 'hole in his ear drum" which he didn't have at all, when we when to an audio specialist.

The vertigo was in fact inappropriately treated HBP and resulting TIAs , and then he had a full blown stroke that they misdiagnosed as labyrinthitis because of the dizzy spells.

All above ended him up with over 100% P & T award under Section 1151 (malpractice) but he was dead by then. VA found all above to be contributing factors to his untimely death.

The VA audiologist was the only person at this VAMC to recognize his problems were not due to any ear problem or infection problem. She noted that in the medical records.

Thanks for your responses, I have been treated in a TBI & poly trauma center at  Palo Alto, CA through the V.A. This was after the explosion because I was knocked down unconscious (2012), I've had so many therapies but I stopped going to the V.A. one year after my injury (2013) because the health care there was not even close to the one that I got in Walter Reed naval hospital. I am currently rated at 80% and already submitted an intent to file claim, beacuse there are so many disabilities that I did not claim and already have been diagnosed by my doctor.

There is a 1.6mm shrapnel piece in my left ethmoid sinus according to an x ray at the V.A. so I made an appointment a few weeks ago at the ENT clinic at the V.A. I will let them know about my non stop vertigo issue to them to see what is going on because I still have it and it is very annoying, I have been taking meclizine for vertigo as prescribed, thanks again for your inputs!!!

bring up the issue of getting tested for superior canal dehiscence,,,, push the issue ,,doctors don't know crap about it, its rare, ,,   drums beating in ears is a type of tinnitus,  yoiurs is an old post ,, and I hope this gets to you,, I had the crap for 20 years before being diagnosed. asked for high resolution ct scan after I heard my eyes move. true,,, doctor still thought I was nuts.. but had it and fixed ....another symptom is     dizzy when lifting or straining.. good luck..  and  the computer screen moves or the words move on the page is one that I had.
