Question

3 back surgerys while active, extreme sciatic pain for 10 years after retirementi probably had 50 epidural injections for EXTREME pain, work in a hospital, went to doc there he said i can have continual back surgery for years... or get the weight i had steadily gained since the 1st back surgery off. I was 180lbs in bootcamp 230lbs at 15yr mark and first surgery (im 6'3). 10 years after retirement with little to no activity i was nearly 350. I found a doctor the execs in the hospital used, got a procedure called duodenal switch 2 years ago... i eat constantly to keep my protein up, take alot of vitamins, and eat even more to try to gain weight because i cant get above 155lbs no matter how much i eat. Things are different... but my back feels great i can even golf again, ... whole new wardrobe, age 80 seems possible again, and life is good. Find a great surgeon, ask for duodenal switch (youll gain weight back with all the others) and find happiness again. I did. That other guy has no idea what he's talking about.

Welcome to hadit.  I moved your post to a new topic, which started in 2011.  This is so more people see it and others dont get confused as to which questions you are answering.  I can see why you posted it there, it makes sense to group the "gastric bypass" together, but people are unlikely to respond to 11 year old posts.
In the future, to ask your question, please start a new topic.

Like yourself many of us have gained weight since bootcamp, I certainly have.  And, its especially difficult to keep weight off with an injury.

Now, I have a question, since several people I know also had bypass surgury, including my ex wife.

The surgeon, who did a "Roen Y" procedure, explained that doctors did not understand "why", BEFORE PATIENTS WHO HAD THE SURGERY EVEN LEFT THE HOSPITAL, had improved blood pressure, lower cholesteral and other health benefits.

The interesting part is they had not yet lost significant weight yet (save for the parts removed with the surgery), but their health still improved...and quickly.

What I especially dont get is that pretty much every person I know who had the surgery, "had a very significant personality change" after the surgery.  In my ex's example, the things she like before the surgury she did not like after, and vice versa, including me, and we got a divorce around a year after the surgery.

For women its a huge deal, often not as much with men.  A 250 woman who looses 100 pounds is often very suprised that men "suddenly pay attention to them", doing things like opening doors for them.   And, that affects their personality.

So, my question is, "did the surgery change your personality also?"

Interesting question. I know that many doctors and health systems require mental counseling prior to approving any gastric weight procedure, in part because if you have an unhealthy emotional or physical relationship with food it doesn't matter WHAT they bypass where.

I'm curious about skin, though. from 350 to 150. (I'm a little more than you were when you started, even with MOVE- a re-injured leg helped wipe out about 4 months of weight loss). You can PM me if you don't want to answer here, but I'm interested in loose skin and elasticity. You hear how some people have to get cosmetic surgery later, which most insurance and VA doesn't pay for unless there is a health/cleanliness issue associated with it. Others don't have to have any removed and they seem to bounce back just fine over several months. Which was it with you, and if it was the former, what strategies do you use to deal with the excess skin left over?

I have just recently read in medical news that there is significant risk of fungal infections occurring as result of  gastric surgeries  and these fungal infections are being misdiagnosed as bacterial infections by a great many doctors unless they are specialist in fungal infections.  If not quickly and correctly diagnosed as a fungal infection then people have died from this chit.

A special blood test must be administered to identify the fungal infection.

One of the studies I've read on it concludes that there is, but whether or not it's due to the nature of the specific surgery, or just the fact that someone was opened up on the table (a risk for every surgery) is yet to be determined and more study is needed. That one was from 2018, though.

If it makes you feel any better I know at least 5 women in the last 20 years who have gone through various form of the surgery. All but one have gone batshit crazy and divorced the spose for reasons unknown. I know 0 men who have had it.

Yep, Rattler.  That pretty much describes what happened with my (ex) spouse.

Prior to the surgery, she would NOT leave the kids with a babysitter, as she was concerned what would happen.

After the surgery, she was gone at the college "studying in study groups", and not with the children, so they were home alone for several hours before I got off work.  She could have done her homework "at home", but instead, met for study groups.

Yea, I remember those study groups in college.  Mostly, it was a time for socializing...not much studying, except maybe for the nerds.  It was mostly an excuse to meet people of the opposite sex for "study group".  Im not even sure all of them were even students at the college, at least one was ummm, shall I say, not a student at all, except maybe a student of certain female parts.  I mean..gee I had been single in college in the past, so this was not my first rodeo.

Yep, she went "BS crazy" and moved out.  My current wife and I laff about it.  My wife says "she (my current wife) " got the better end of the deal, and, her new hubby...well, not so much.   She reminds me of a faucet that you are trying to get a drink out of, which has 2 speeds...no water at all, or squirt it in your face.  There was no "sipping" of the water, she was either Boiling angry, or sugar sweet, no in between.  And, you never knew which you would get on any given day.  Was it the sweet loving wife, or the angry madwoman about to explode.  It changed from day to day, minute to minute.  She could go from sweet to violently angry in 3.0 seconds flat, for no reason at all.
