Federal Disability Retirement Question - Federal Employees

Rate this question

Question

I am a long term Fed who recently applied for Disability Retirement.  I remember chatting with a few others on the forum who had similar backgrounds.  I'm wondering how long it really takes for OPM to process disability retirements?

Thanks much for your input.

I am in the same boat. I was let go from my federal job for PTSD on 2 July. I put my disability retirement package in around the end of June. I received a call from an ABC counselor about a week after I put my package in and he gave me my initial counseling over the phone on what to expect. I was told the average time it takes is six months. If that is true I should hear something back around December. Good luck. I hope this helps, Bill

It took me one year but HR sat on it until I pushed the issue. I had some fellow co workers that were close to retirement age and they got it in about 3 months from time of filing to decision.

I have 29+ years and was hoping to make it to 30 but my health is such that I'm only showing up about 70% of the time.  Hoping they can push this through quickly.

In Oklahoma, from Tinker AFB, it was all said and done in 6 months.  It all depends on your condition, skill set, and available slots in other career fields.

They'll try to put a job placement to accommodate your disabilities but, frankly, that was just a pipe dream.  OPM was not very forthcoming with information, however, you just have to keep at them.

I went out with 10 years of federal service and went at age 40.  There is not an age requirement.  Explore your options. Don't be afraid to ask questions either.  In my case my HR and retirement offices were not very forth coming with information until I pushed some buttons.

ArNG11, I work for a very small agency and there are no other positions that pay at my current rate.  And even if there were, I couldn't perform them successfully.  The Agency has admitted this.  I heard that OPM is taking 10 months to complete disability retirement applications, I was hoping to hear that isn't true.
