The last known surviving flag-raiser, Charles W. Lindberg, who helped put up the first flag, died Sunday in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. He was 86.

"It is cold and we have no blankets.

The little children are freezing to death.

My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food; no one knows where they are-perhaps freezing to death.

I want to have time to look for my children and see how many of them I can find.

Maybe I shall find them among the dead.

Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad.

From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."

Yes- Semper fi to all of these beloved men-sad news-

The photo of Iwo Jima is my screen saver.

When I was about 12 years old I got off a school bus at Arlington and stood amazed at what was before me- the enormous bronze status of Iwo Jima that we all are so familiar with.

The detail and the wonder of this wonderful sculpture-true to the famous photo-

made me feel as though my life would be affected by it all.

My family is from Europe and from a Native American Indian Tribe.

The tribe had war veterans but my European part of family didnt have any American veterans.

I dont know why but here I am decades after seeing this statue-

a widow of a combat Marine and a student of the United States Marine Corps at AMU.

BTW all- see "Flag of our Fathers "if you can-

I saw the other movie-- "Letters from Iwo Jima "all in Japanese with subtitles-

but am taping the American version today-

"Letters" was wonderful -dont know if they will show it at the local VA-they have a movie theatre-

to many WWII vets- the Japanese are still 'Japs' ,pardon that awful word)and still the enemy-

The movie was wonderful.

Kids-on both sides- fighting for Suribachi.

BTW all- you all know I am sure- that the famous Iwo photo was of the second flag raising-not the first.

..........and the Japs are apparently still disgraced by the outcome of the WWII, to the point of changing the name of the island of Iwo Jima. I guess that they are STILL operating upon the illusion that if you don't talk about it and manage to do away with all the historical appendages connected with IT (WWII), then it will just go away.

They STILL do NOT teach ANYTHING about WWII in any of their school classrooms........

And, they murdered my Uncle, so if I should accidently slip and call them Japs.....well, darn, I guess I'm just not very Politically Correct.

Shot him first, then cut off his head when he fell down, on the Bataan Stroll.

My Bad.

a couple WWII vets threw a VA meal at my husband when he worked in Dietitics at the local VA-

there was rice in it-

most diet cards of vets at VAMCs however state clearly their diet restrictions and their aversions-for every patient there-

Some of the Nam VAMC vets refused to eat rice too- guess this should all be in social- but -oh well-

And dont even mention sauerkraut to some of these WWIIers-

I have been greatly touched by the interviews at Pearl between both the Japanese vets and the American vets who were there then-

It was difficult for many of them to even think of talking to their enemy counterparts-

but once they started talking - Japanese vet to American vet-

it is stuff like this that should be in the high schools and the history books.

I could talk about this subject all day so I better go-I do understand your feelings.

War is Hell on Earth and nothing can ever alter that fact.

Saw on the internet an article from The Boston Globe. There is a team on Iwo JIma searching for the remaions of Sgt William Genaust, of the 28th Marines, who was the marine photographer at the flag raising ( i think he took the movie picture) and was killed 9 days later while helping some marine securs a cave.

    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
    • Welcome to hadit!

There are certain rules about community care reimbursement, and I have no idea if you met them or not.  Try reading this:

      https://www.va.gov/resources/getting-emergency-care-at-non-va-facilities/

However, (and I have no idea of knowing whether or not you would likely succeed) Im unsure of why you seem to be so adamant against getting an increase in disability compensation.

When I buy stuff, say at Kroger, or pay bills, I have never had anyone say, "Wait!  Is this money from disability compensation, or did you earn it working at a regular job?"  Not once.  Thus, if you did get an increase, likely you would have no trouble paying this with the increase compensation.

However, there are many false rumors out there that suggest if you apply for an increase, the VA will reduce your benefits instead.

That rumor is false but I do hear people tell Veterans that a lot.  There are strict rules VA has to reduce you and, NOT ONE of those rules have anything to do with applying for an increase.

Yes, the VA can reduce your benefits, but generally only when your condition has "actually improved" under ordinary conditions of life.

Unless you contacted the VA within 72 hours of your medical treatment, you may not be eligible for reimbursement, or at least that is how I read the link, I posted above. Here are SOME of the rules the VA must comply with in order to reduce your compensation benefits:

      https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/38/3.344

    • Good question.

Maybe I can clear it up.

The spouse is eligible for DIC if you die of a SC condition OR any condition if you are P and T for 10 years or more.  (my paraphrase).

      More here:

      Source:

      https://www.va.gov/disability/dependency-indemnity-compensation/

NOTE:   TO PROVE CAUSE OF DEATH WILL LIKELY REQUIRE AN AUTOPSY.  This means if you die of a SC condtion, your spouse would need to do an autopsy to prove cause of death to be from a SC condtiond.    If you were P and T for 10 full years, then the cause of death may not matter so much.
