Taking Away Service Connection ?

Rate this question

SANDMAN

Question

Can the VA take away service connection altogether , if they feel you have gotten better.

Example You get rated 30 % for PTSD, 2 years down the line they say your doing much better. No more disability for you. I guess what i'm asking is would it go to 0% because possibly it could flair up again or would they say you are no longer service connected period.Maybe i'm being paranoid , but being a newbee you hear all the horror stories.I would just hate to have to go thru the whole process again.

Thanks SGT SANDMAN

Can the VA take away service connection altogether...

Thanks SGT SANDMAN

Yes. Some disabilities have a time limit. I have had several SC ratings reduced over the years. Malaria is worth 10% for one year unless you have a relapse. I was also reduced to 0% for unstable lower back and reduced to 0% for hip arthritis. Although it's all still on my record.

I think I've heard a mental condition is permanent but treatable. In other words once diagnosed with bipolar, always bipolar, unless the dx was wrong in the first place.

I don't mean that it's not treatible, just that it's permanent since it's a brain chemistry issue.

If you are service connected for a condition which the VA finds that may not be permanent, ie mental condition, they may lower the rating if they find that the condition is better.

You know if you are rated 100% for a psychotic condition if you recover enough so that you are not psychotic the VA might reduce you to 70%. The thing is they should consider you for IU if you are not working due to the mental disorder even if you are not 100% schedular anymore. I personally think anyone who can't work and support themselves due to a service connected disability should be 100% period. The difference between a emotionally ill person living on the street, or an institution, and one not on the street is the ability to work.
