Dumb Geek Question

Berta

Recommended Posts

I was so frustrated that my satellitte connection was down since Wednesday , I started to consider Dial up and realized my Acer Tower has no phone plug in thing at all in the areas where the perpheral things are. The long other black thing that holds all the PC,Modem and printer and other plugs for doodads has 2 phone access things but they didnt work.....

then AOL connection icon said I have to add a dialer device.......

did they mean plug the phone line in somewhere, like in the olden days, or is 'dialer device' some sort of program?

I HATE dial up so I am kinda glad it didnt work anyhow.

Maybe with the external modem, I cant use dial up at all........

I guess my question is I have Acer PC circa maybe 2009, am I missing a phone line thing on the front or the back of the Acer tower I have?

My fax worked last time I checked with phone line to printer.

very few, if any, fax/modems won't serve both your purposes FAX and MODEM. You will need a "dialer program which your provider should have. You will need to call them. The only other person I know with Hughes had the dialer program on the setup disk that came with the service, I believe Wal-mart and Radio Shack are the only two retailers that still sell them off the shelf, I have a couple dozen in a box in my garage, but you would have to come to Guaymas to get one.

Check: Start>Control Panel>Device Manager to see if you already have one. I believe you do. Remember dial-up is only 33.8 thousand bits/sec while broadband (Hughes is one) operates at 3-30 million bits/sec.

As my wife will confirm, there are no dumb geek questions--only dumb geeks!

If you cannot get your system to work, get back to me there is a solution.

Thanks Jim!..... it is fine now.

For some reason the Satellite was in a degraded mode....

Oddly enough--I went to get out the start up Hughes setup disk and remembered, I went onto the new Gen 4 a little over a year ago, and there is No disk for Gen 4.

I just searched the hard drive and did find a Device Manager! Thanks a lot!

However the last thing I need is dial up again.....

I am sure spoiled by the speed of the Gen 4 satellite (when it works right)

Thanks Red......I live in the hills of the Allegheny plateau and a friend on a local hill has the same long waits with dial up that I used to have, prior to the Satellite dish.

We both lost our Kindle hot spots too and maybe that is due to our environment....I can pick up my WIFI hot spot just by parking out side of the local library, but it seems to vanish after I get up the 350 ft high hill to my home.

Technology is Wonderful,however.

when it all works Ha Ha!!!!

Verizon has a mobile hotspot that may help you Berta. Try here:

I think AT and T has a similar one.

These devices use a "black box" to pick up a wireless cell phone signal and then it goes to your computer. Im not sure how well it would work in your area. Do you have a cell phone, and does it work in your area??
