  • Can a 100 percent Disabled Veteran Work and Earn an Income?

    employment 2.jpeg

You’ve just been rated 100% disabled by the Veterans Affairs. After the excitement of finally having the rating you deserve wears off, you start asking questions. One of the first questions that you might ask is this: It’s a legitimate question – rare is the Veteran that finds themselves sitting on the couch eating bon-bons … Continue reading

Pulmonary embolism

Not sure wher to start.  My husband was admitted to hospital on 8/27.  HIs o gen was down to 80.  Diagnosed with pulmonary embolism.  THIS IS HIS SECONDD TIME FOR THIS.  So he was put on blood thinner for life now.

the doctor did say it was putting pressure on his heart, kidneys, and his diabetes was running high.  He was diagnosised with acute kidney failure.  But he is also already in third stage and really close to forth stage.

He also has mitral valve leakage.  And he had replacement of his aortic valve in 2013.  And it is leaking again.  He is already service connected for cads.  I’m thinking of filing claim again for the valve problems.  I have seen several getting service connected for it.

Also he has had sleep apnea for several years.  He had to wear it in the hospital.

So I’m just throwing it all at the va hard and heavy.  Lol

ok, can someone give there opinion on this.  Bva just approved an increase on diabetes to 40%.  This was May 30.  still waiting for retro.  Been told different stories.  They remanded the claim for kidney failure and sent  paper work for tdiu, for him to fill out and send back.  So then our Vso told us that it looks like they are going to hold out the retro until they approve the iu.  Is this the normal procedure?

If your husband isn't already service-connected for the PE, I'd suggest trying to get his cardiologist, pulmonologist, or other doctor (preferably a specialist) to opine/provide a nexus letter on the PE being a secondary condition.  With SC for his CAD already, I would think they'd connect the dots.  Also, diabetes is a risk factor for PEs, (as is Obstructive Sleep Apnea), so be sure to cover all the bases with medical opinions/nexus letters for possible secondary SC.    Residuals of PE (usually thromboembolism) requiring daily warfarin is a 60% rating.  Depending on the effects on his heart, he may warrant a 100% rating, especially if there is Pulmonary Hypertension.  Besides Diabetes and CAD, is he SC for other issues, like the Sleep Apnea?

I hope you have a good VSO, and are granted the TDIU.  More than that, I hope your husband is feeling better.  Hopefully some of the more knowledgeable members here will give you better info soon.

No.   The VA can not withold the retro.  I looked for the fast letter, but could not find it.  There was a fast letter about 4 years ago, or so, that explained that the VA can not hold the retro on partial grants.

Gee Broncovet, that letter would help a lot of us as the VA believes that they can hold your retro until they have your SSOC completed.  They did it to me last year.

    • I filed for my mitral valve regurgitation heart disease secondary to a service-connected condition on 7-30-18. It was granted on 8-30-18. Since I filed for this heart valve issue and was awarded, can I still file for hypertension ? I have been seeing comments that you should file for hypertension first and file for heart disease as a secondary. Can I file for hypertension as a secondary to my heart disease ? I am alittle confused on this matter.

    • I am a 100% disabled veteran, At first I was super excited to find out I am getting retro pay for back benefits to 2006. But that was over 2 months ago. I been waiting and waiting and calling to ask them wheres my back pay. They first told me "one month" than I call again. The guy started reading a script of basically "we are malingering on paying you" type crap. I was wondering if there is any number I can call besides that 800-827-1000 number to inquire about my status. I don't know why its taken so long when there is specific information telling them from the judge that VA owes.

There was a remanded to see if I was eligible for IU (I get it now since 2014 im actually 90% with 10 of that been IU). I been on SS since 2004. Can Someone help me out? Thank you

    • You might have a 38 CFR 3.156 situation-

meaning the VA might have considered your claim in 95/96 as "not well grounded" and failed to even get your STRs.Or they did get your STRs but never considered the specific entry you cited here.

Lots of discussion under a search, of 38 CFR. 3.156 (a)(b) (c) ---here is a winner:
