IBS and GERD

Rate this question

BMCS2000

Question

Hi all, I am currently rated 30% for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. GERD is documented in my medical record but I never sought disability for it. Since I am already 30% for IBS, can I even get a separate rating for GERD?  I retired in 2000, and have had the IBS rating since 2006. When I've gone for increases in the past they've always had the opportunity to revisit all my rated disabilities and I'm nervous about that. Does anyone have recent similar experience? TIA, -Jim

@BMCS2000It is not unusual for those suffering from musculoskeletal disabilities like DDD to also have GERD and/or IBS. The military fed us a constant diet of NSAIDs which is typically to blame. If you file for GERD, they might first do a test to see if you have a heliobacter pylori infection (a common cause of GERD). You might also have to have an Upper GI done (they did that to me).

@GBArmyis right. Having digestive issues is definitely depressing, frustrating, and can cause anxiety. Although GERD can be managed to varying degrees with medications, it can definitely leave you incapacitated with misery until it passes.
