  1. I am currently taking Fish Oil prescribed and provided by the VA. Fish Oil Ultra with Natural Omega-3 1000 mg softgels made by AVKare. NDC# 42291-402-01

Just received 6 more bottles about 2 weeks ago. Also currently taking generic Crestor prescribed and provided by VA. Also taking an iron supplement prescribed and provided by VA.

Was going to Orlando VAMC until 8/2011 where a Doctor of Osteopathy at VA prescribed to get my "bad" cholesterol down. Now I am going to Lawrenceville GA VA clinic. It may have something to do with your particular facility although logically it should all be the same.

If they say the VA doesn't issue, that is an untruth. My best advice is to go see the Advocate at your facility if they won't voluntarily provide.

As for the bad aftertaste if you keep the fish oil bottle sealed in a quart jar in the refrigerator it will help. Occasionally I do get the belches about 30 minutes after

taking and it is not the most pleasant taste.

At present I am not SC for anything but receive free meds due to low income. At 50% they should provide all your meds for SC or NSC without cost.

Interesting! All of my meds have been provided without problems, including my aspirin and liquid tears, until the Fish Oil was ordered. I have a new PCP now so I'll check this out next time I go in. Thanks for the tip on refrigerating the fish oil....I'll try it.

What is your total cholesterol level?

    Hi John999.

Sorry it took me so long to get back. I spend the day at the VA yesterday. Here's my last lab results: Total Cholesterol 152 - HDL 35 (low) - LDL 92 - Triglycerides 126 and Ratio 4.0

The Crestor has done a good job lowering my Total & LDL's. My PCP took me off Crestor last Sept, putting me on the fish oil, because I was having sudden muscular weakness & joint pain. My HDL was also dropping more than she liked. When she discontinued the Crestor she said that my vascular specialists would most likely put me back on it but she wanted to see if it was causing the problem. Since I’m not able to take the full amount of Fish Oil that was ordered, I’ve been told to slowly re-start the Crestor and watch for increased joint pain & muscular issues.

  3. Is this a normal waiting period for an audiology consult, especially when service connected for hearing loss, or is this an isolated problem only occurring at my VAMC?

Any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks...Georgiapapa

    Georgiapapa...

I am service connected for hearing loss. In Oct. my PCP ordered an audiology consult because I was having increased hearing issues & trouble with my hearing aides. I went for my appointment yesterday, Feb. 17 (almost 4 months). They re-evaluated me and did measurements for new hearing aides. I have an appointment for 2 months from now to have the new hearing aides custom fitted. Every specialist consult i've had recently has taken 3-4 months to get set up. The longest wait has been for a neurologist consult for which I have an appointment in July 2012 (requested by PCP - Oct. 2011).

  4. My VA PCP recently discontinued my generic Crestor & prescribed 4 tabs daily of Ester Omega 3 Fish Oil 1000 MG (300 MG EPA/DHA). I was told that the VA pharmacy does not dispense it. They did provide my recently ordered Vit. D supplements. After taste is horrible on the ones I purchased.

Any suggestions for brand with reduced after taste?

  5. I was found unfit through the MEB process. Before the PEB findings, the head physician found me fit and continue before he transferred to another state as civilian physician. However, when I saw another physician for a routine visit, he said that he'll do the NARSUM. Couple months ago from this writing, I am medically retired. I am O3E with over 21-years of combined service, and would like to know if I can appeal the decision.

I don't have any answers for you but I wanted to welcome you to Hadit ckcjcg. I'm sure you'll find a wealth of information here. Others may be able to help out with your specific situation.

  6. Good morning, crew:

Personal question for those that wish to share: how do you deal with your nightmares? I've tried therapy, meds, etc., but my wife still has to deal with the physical realities of my nightmares. I constantly wake her up, and never feel like I've had any sleep. She keeps (jokingly) threatening me that she's going to move into another bedroom. It's been years of this, and I don't know what else to do. Any inputs, thoughts, etc., would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still working and taking meds for my nightmares made it difficult to wake up so I stay away from them. My nightmares have changed over the years and they are bad enough that my wife now waits until 2 AM to come to bed. My newest thing is taking rolling dives off our high bed. I have recently been told that one of these dives caused a bulged disk (cervical). I guess bed rails are the next thing I'll have to buy.

So what do I do? This was my wife's idea and I generally wait until I've had a few bad nights before I give in to this therapy but it does seem to help. I've been able to relax and get some stress relief if I take a long soak in the tub before I go to bed. My wife pampers me by putting on soft music and lighting the candles. She's even tried some aroma therapy a few times. I've noticed that I sleep much better afterwards and actually wake up feeling decent.

  7. What is Citalpram? Is it an SSRI or anti-depressant? Is it related to Xanax or that family of drug? You may not have any effects until or unless you stopped taking it suddenly.

Here's the drug classification info per Wikipedia.org for Celexa & Xanax. You can find more information on their website or elsewhere:

Citalopram, (trade names: Celexa, Cipramil) is an antidepressant drug of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. It has U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to treat major depression, and is prescribed off-label for a number of anxiety conditions.

Alprazolam (trade name Xanax, available among other generic names) is a short-acting anxiolytic of the benzodiazepine class of psychoactive drugs. Alprazolam, like other benzodiazepines, binds to specific sites on the GABA gamma-amino-butyric acid receptor. Alprazolam is commonly used and FDA approved for the treatment of panic disorder, and anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or social anxiety disorder (SAD).

  8. Berta,

Thank you for posting a portion of the article. The link no longer takes you to the article.

This made my blood boil since I live in TN. I'm assuming his claims and medical care were given in this state.

I'd like to find out more about this one. I hope she wins!!

  9. Ric,

I got light-headed with Citalopram & immediately discontinued it but this was probably due to taking Lisinopril at same time and seems they both are blood pressure meds.

Neurologist suggested dropping the Lisinopril before this happened but PCP disagreed.

WOW! This is exactly what happened to me...Now I understand why I was feeling so terrible while taking both Citlalopram and Lisinopril. I am no longer taking Citalopram. Thanks!!!
