Vet Center Contrary Message On Iu

Question

I saw my Vet Center counselor today. He told me that he and my VA Psych. had spoken about me. Part of it was about changeing my meds (they may be borrowing Marlon Perkins tranq gun) and part seemed like a genuine concern on both their parts that I get out of the post office.

We discussed it as time permitted, and he told me to schedule with my SO and have him file for TDIU. I talked with him about the process as I understand it, that you apply for OPM retirement from USPS while working, then SS and TDIU when OPM has retired you.

He says that they can initiate the process while I'm working. It sounds like he would be in my corner, for what it's worth. I am scared of not having security for my family, he understands, but is if possible, less optimistic about my "life", physical/mental condition and the odds on my making my last 8 years, 6 months, 4 days - as well as what would be left of me at that point.

Having been recently bumped to 90%, I can now make more money by collecting AND working at USPS.

BUT I DON'T CARE! I want out!!

We aren't yet accustomed to the new pay rate and probably wouldn't lose much anyway. My family is my top concern, I don't want to fail them, but personally, I would certainly sacrifice more than what it appears we would to get out ASAP!

I am primarily puzzled about his IU statement. Has anyone ever heard of a process by which you initiate consideration for IU while still working?

It would be nice, as insecure as I am. From the VA standpoint, I could see an advantage to being started the day after your final day on the job, no earlier effective date, no back pay.

Is he mistaken? Am I just too anxious to believe what I want to?

Gary

Gary, I'm a former rural carrier for the P.O. waiting for disability retirement to go through. I have a effective date of 8-01-05 but haven't heard from them since August. I hope to apply for IU soon, I've been off since 10-04-04 and for me its been a long process to get anything accomplished in regards to disability retirement etc.. From my viewpoint, it would be nothing short of a miracle to have your IU start the day after your final day on the job. Ask the person you met with to back it up in writing.

I have no personal experience, but from what I saw on the old board, you can get back to the day after you were medically retired, BUT ONLY as back pay. You can only file for TDIU when you are unemployed, or have a definite effective date of your disability retirement.

Since most claims take at least a year, and given the TDIU reviews ongoing, now probably two plus years, I don't think it is something you want to do right now.

If and when you get a definite disability retirement date from USPS, is the time to file for TDIU. My opinion; if I'm wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct me.

You initiate your OPM retirement while still employed because as soon as you are approved by OPM you will be separated from the USPS. I got OPM, SSDI and TDIU. It comes in stages . OPM is the easiest to get by far.

I understand, I should have said that when I left the P.O. it was because of sickness. I got sick at work, ended up in the hospital, and to get a disability retirement, they say it will take 6 mo. to a year from 8-01-05, the day I ran out of all pay. I could have retired at 55, I didn't think of that. The other guy said he had 8 years to go so I assumed he was'nt 55 yet.

I sent you a E-Mail......hopefully it will help you make the needed request in order to get the PO to respond to you the way I think they will , which will get your IU.SSDI...and OPM with out much hassle and quicker.

If your disability retirement has been approved it should only take a few weeks to start getting a paycheck from OPM. What they do is give you an interim payment until they do the final calculation. Have you been separated yet via Form 50? You can call OPM to find out what is going on with your retirement.
