    Have Questions? Get Answers.

Tips on posting on the forums.

    1. Post a clear title like ‘Need help preparing PTSD claim’ or “VA med center won’t schedule my surgery instead of ‘I have a question.

    2. Knowledgeable people who don’t have time to read all posts may skip yours if your need isn’t clear in the title.
I don’t read all posts every login and will gravitate towards those I have more info on.

    3. Use paragraphs instead of one massive, rambling introduction or story.

Again – You want to make it easy for others to help. If your question is buried in a monster paragraph, there are fewer who will investigate to dig it out.

    Leading too:

exclamation-point.pngPost straightforward questions and then post background information.

    Examples:

    • Question A. I was previously denied for apnea – Should I refile a claim?
      • Adding Background information in your post will help members understand what information you are looking for so they can assist you in finding it.
Rephrase the question: I was diagnosed with apnea in service and received a CPAP machine, but the claim was denied in 2008. Should I refile?

    • Question B. I may have PTSD- how can I be sure?
      • See how the details below give us a better understanding of what you’re claiming.
Rephrase the question: I was involved in a traumatic incident on base in 1974 and have had nightmares ever since, but I did not go to mental health while enlisted. How can I get help?

This gives members a starting point to ask clarifying questions like “Can you post the Reasons for Denial of your claim?”

You’ve just been rated 100% disabled by the Veterans Affairs. After the excitement of finally having the rating you deserve wears off, you start asking questions. One of the first questions that you might ask is this: It’s a legitimate question – rare is the Veteran that finds themselves sitting on the couch eating bon-bons … Continue reading

Its a must my rater see everything in my PTSD submitted packet.

We all feel the same way - that doesn't mean though that it will happen.

I know the C&P Dr has nothing. How can I make sure the packet is reviewed

Unless there is "nothing" in your file then perhaps the C&P examiner will

have something to review.

There is no way for you to "make sure the packet is reviewed".

You - are at their mercy.

lets worst case it

the C&P examiner has only the PTSD check list in her office.

This our first and last visit, she is going determine in 1 hour my DX for PTSD and it severity

Is this what everybody is telling me

Yes, I agree with that except it will most likely take less than 1 hour.

This is only my opinion.

Look calm down you are jumping like a frog in a hot skillet.

My advise as hard as it is to throttle down and wait for the VARO to develop your case. See what they propose. I am willing to guess that you are going to do better than you can imagine.

In other words do research on your claim, get help from the Medical side and wait till they make a decision.

In answer to your question you can request a hearing from the VARO and meet with your rater. If it was me I would wait for a decision.

Your main objective now is to show up for the exam on time. That is all that should be in your mind for now. Then get a copy of the exam later. It usually takes a few weeks. The rater is going to look at you as you are now. She is going to go over your history a bit. She will probably ask you a few questions about your medical history and she may verify that you are a RVN combat vet is she even knows the difference between a grunt and a truck driver. I bet the exam is over in 20 minutes if it lasts that long. They get paid by the patient. Just do as Pete is saying and as Carlie is saying. If the doctor starts to talk about your history before the military just tell her everything was fine before and bad afterwards.

Pete,

I believe the only time a claimant actually meets with their specific rater

(decision maker) is when it is with a DRO.

Having a hearing does not necessarily get you before your rater.

That is an interesting fact. I think that is a big boost for asking for a DRO Hearing. Meeting with the person that can actually rate you is huge. They get to look you in the eye. I bet most vets don't ask for this and they are just a pile of paper to the rater. The only DRO that I met with who denied me was for my CUE. Too heavy for him.

Carlie:

A Veteran at any time can ask for a Hearing and the VA must comply within a reasonable time whatever that is with the VA. I personally have had 5 Hearings at VA and profited by each one. On three occasions I met with my rating officer.

I am surprised that more Vets do not take advantage of this to advance their claims.

What I am trying to convey in this Post is that sometimes all you have is to wait or work on your claim while you wait.

Even if you don't have a claim you can still ask for a hearing and they have to arrange one.

Pete,

I wish it worked this way at St. Pete VARO. At the hearings I've had that

were not DRO hearings (4 I think) I've never met with the decision maker

assigned to my claim. All I've gotten is some flunkie that really had very little

understanding of the rating procedures. One stated they had never heard of M21.

sgmdae,

I apologize if I am wrong but I don't think you have been rated yet. Your claim is in the process of being rated, please forgive me but you need to try to think of something else. I am not sure how long your claim has been pending but VA doesn't move that fast and in some cases if you try to push them, they will give you a quick answer that you won't like. It could send your depression to a point you don't want to go so take a deep breath, take lots of deep breaths and calm down. This is a mind game with VA and you can't lose it. No amount of pressure you think you can put on them will help unless you are in a financial hardship category where you may lose your home or if you are terminally ill, VA doesn't care. I am not trying to be a jerk; I am just trying to help you out. If your claim has not been rated and you do not have a financial hardship/terminal illness VA will not give a hearing, you must first be rated then ask for a hearing and that could be months to a year or longer. Just make sure you go to all your appointments and your C & P exams. When you see your doctor's just let them treat your conditions/systems. They cannot grant you disability or approve your rating, but they can treat you.

Hope this makes sense

Only thing I'll add is try to get your doctors to make helpful statements in your visit notes, ones that may be used as nexus letters or evidence.

I've been working on that as I learn what terminology is helpful for each condition.

So - the more research you do on your conditions and succesful claims for them, the better idea you'll have of what info you'd like in your records.

Hang tough! B)

Thank you all

Good advice

I just received my notes from my DR at mental health, just as I felt, she turned things around to effect my rating to be low. The rating percentage is not as important as the care, but she make comments that are untrue. This really bothers me, with one my major heart burns, it people in authority, not being truthful,

i will give some example later, I am really angry right now

I would get my own doctor outside the VA system. Unless your C&P doctor says you are totally disabled by PTSD you are going to have a ways to go. During this time you probably need your own private doctor to help you. The doctor you pay always writes a better letter and keeps better notes than VA. Tell your doctor what you want and what you are trying to accomplish. If you depend on the VA you have to take what you get. The C&P exam will probably carry more weight than this VA hack you have been seeing.

I agree, I just read the gAf scores from two different people within the same hours, I posted them for the review. Looking at the notes, the trend in this forum, the C&P coming up I can see and I am prepare for a rating of 0% to 30%.

He notes show a lie about work impairment, stated I have skills, where the truth is I have massive counseling, final warning and etc. I can't tell her of my Homicidal ideation because she made it plain she will call the law, because of the rules they have to follow.

If I knew of this, and didn't have C&P exam. I would stop my tratment.

She place PTSD? each time she types PTSD, this a code to the rter I know, maybe that why I got such a quick C&P
