Retro Pay

Rate this question

Question

I received some of my retro pay this morning. Is it normal for them not to give all of your retro pay at once? At 80% I should be getting retro from April 28 through Sept 28 which I figured to be about 7,000+. I only have 2,700 this morning. Do I need to call someone and complain? I appreciate you input.

Yes sir I would be calling someone.

Do you owe any back taxes or student loans?

I don't owe any taxes or school loans. Not sure about the retirement offset, I still need to figure all of that out. My retirement pay exceeds 5,000 for the past 5 months, and that is how much my Retro is off. I am really confused.

they can't take back taxes without a court order ,, right ?

or any other monies without a court hearing ,, right ?

the VA can't give your money to any creditor , including the irs without a court saying so ,, right ?

I would suggest two things.

First, I would call the toll free number and ask. Dont hold your breath, but there is some chance your question will be answered correctly there. Of course, you need to take your toll free number with a grain of salt because there is also a strong chance the answer you get will be wrong. Still, IMHO, any answer is better than no answer at all.

Second, try sending an IRIS email with your question. Try to word your question clear and concise to have a good chance at a correct answer.

Even tho the toll free number and IRIS are not recommended by many Vets advocates, what have you got to loose? You may even get an answer that makes you feel better. I say use these communication methods, but know there responses are not always accurate.

Its kind of like asking someone for directions...will the directions they give be accurate? Who knows, sometimes yes, sometimes no, but almost always better than driving around aimlessly.

Remember, if you call 5 times you likely get 5 different answers, so use your judgement as to which answer you think is best. Its ok to respond to them by saying something like,

"Really? Gee, I just got a different answer yesterday..can you check with your supervisor to make sure this is right...I really want to get to the bottom of this."
