Something to remember

The banking laws give a direct depositor such as the VA or an employer the right to also make withdrawals,

supposedly to correct errors. Many banks, when presented with a VA letter and paperwork, will

(incorrectly) withdraw from other accounts to satisfy the notice amount.

The fiduciary mess can be even more extreme, and a bank may transfer all money to the VA fiduciary scheme (again, in error.)

It can take significant time and effort to get a bank to correct it's mistakes.

Moral

Move the money somewhere else. (Another bank, credit union, broker, etc.)

that is not associated with the direct deposit account.

At the very least, (and the least effective) cash a VA or SSA check, and deposit the cash, not the check.

This will no longer be possible when the checks go away. Generally, unless you have a lot of money in the bank,

a bank will not do this for a retro check. They typically insist that you to deposit the check, so that they can take advantage of the "waiting period"

If the VA decides that you should be paying "co-pay", and you don't, even if it should not be charged,

The VA may request payment (and get it) from SSA and or the IRS(when there is a positive balance)

Thanks to everyone for your kind and considerate postings.

Things are just now starting to feel real.

I paid off every bill I had and all utilities have been paid in advance for the

next six months.

I took the majority of what was left and moved it to an account that VA has

no authority over - even to make my direct deposits into.

A very wise man at hadit, taught me years ago to to do this.

Reason being - if the VBA decides they have made a mistake of some kind,

they have the authority to go back into the account they made the deposit into -

and snag the cash BACK !
