VA Math, Confusing, Right? Calculate Your Final Rating Percentage!
Tbird posted a blog entry in Tbirds Blog,
10 + 50 = 50 and other VA math mysteries explained.
VA Math It’s Not Your Mother’s Arithmetic
“VA Math” is the way that the VA computes combined impairment ratings for multiple conditions in a Veteran’s compensation benefits claim – and it requires that you unlearn real math. When a Veteran has multiple medical conditions that are service-connected and the Veterans Affairs rates each at a different percentage, it would seem that they should just add up your percentages to get to a total body impairment rating.-

VA will propose adding rare cancers to the presumed service-connected list as related to military environmental exposure

Post in I need some help, please
Tbird posted an answer to a question,
If you are looking for help taking care of him something like a home health aide that comes in during the week and helps with what he needs help with. For this I would contact your local VA hospital and ask to speak to the Social Worker, explain your situation, ask for help and how to proceed.
If you are looking for additional compensation in the form of Special Monthly Compensation check out this video from CCK Law I think it will give you a good idea what it is and how to go about applying for it.
For example there is a Special Monthly Compensation Rate for TBI try reading this article from The Veterans Law Blog on SMC T It is a subscription site but it allows you to view 3 articles for free a month.
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
I hope this helps.

I have suffered from migraines for the past 10 years. Over the last two they have become increasingly worse increasing from 1-3 per month to daily. I’ve tried 11 different medications to include botox and other treatments, but nothing seems to works besides a combination of medication that makes me sleep most of the day away. I went to a C&P for an increase for my migraines and this is what the doctor wrote.
Does the veteran have very frequent prostrating and prolonged attacks of migraine headache pain? Yes
Does the veteran’s headache condition impact her ability to work? Yes
Veteran has not work since last Aug because she cannot maintain a 40 hour work week. Vet work for the federal government and is currently on LWOP. Pt can work physical or sedentary work based on migraine headaches with the ability to be allowed to be excused from work as frequently as weekly due to a migraine headache and the resultant nausea/emesis, pain and poor concentration.
I am currently on LWOP while OPM adjudicates my OPM disability claim. I put in a claim for an increase for migraines so I can apply for IU. I’m currently at 40%. I don’t understand how I’m able to work when I have a migraine 3 days a week. Who is going to hire me and allow me to be excused from work weekly? I know in order to get granted 50% it has to show that a veteran has frequent migraines and has a financial hardship. I feel that his statement is saying that I am choosing not to work which is not the case. Do you think that his statement hurt my chances of getting a 50% rating?
