How do I get into VA hospital to see mental health specialist?

Rate this question

Question

I am seeing 2 separate psychiatrists. I have been diagnosed with PTSD, depression and anxiety from non combat. Both say it is from my military service. I would like to get into a VA facility and see a psychiatrist or other mental health professional. Is this possible or do I have to make a claim and be diagnosed by a VA contractor first? Thanks.

I also conducted a search for this to no avail.

what don't you qualify? your an Honorable discharge veteran right? or medically discharged? or have an discharge other than dishonorable.

your meaning VA HeathCare  right? and were not meaning a compensation claim? right? just VA MEDICAL CARE..if you served 90 days then you qualify.

I understand what you are saying but i'm telling you the VA has denied me medical and mental health services. I was honorble discharged. I was using the VA mental health services under the MST program before my claim was denied. After my claim was denied my Mental Health appointments were canceled.

The VA is telling me I don't qualify for services. Maybe this is why the NVLSP took my case?

buck, from what I can read of your exchange with Pockets it looks like they are talking about FREE health care. I could be wrong but that is how the thread reads.

vets not in the highest priority groups end up with a co-pay and some out of pocket fees if they don't have outside insurance and Pockets says that happened to them when the VA denied their MST claim.

wanted to mention that a Veteran does not need to be service connected or rated to be able to use his healthcare benefits at his local ''Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

Buck, my personal experience here was not inconsequential in terms of cost.

as i have said before it took decades to get the VA to even admit I had served in the military much less accept me and provide treatment. Once they did in 2013 I got rated in about 6 months. However until that rating came through the VA was charging me full boat for meds and counseling. every month I got a bill and had to go stand on the billing clerks desk and make a scene to get them to rescind it.

a veterans financial status affects the cost or copays so if the OP is basically broke they may get care for free, otherwise It will likely come with a price tag until they get SC;d.
