Welcome to Hadit!

There's really a lot to it. Once it has been received and cataloged into the system, you can check the status of it via va.gov. They will give you an estimation as to how long it might take.

As the others have said it takes the VA as long as it takes the VA.  We have all been through it.  Once you have filed and submitted all relevant information try to get a hobby to take your mind off of your case.  It will drive you crazy otherwise.  Appeals to the BVA can be completed in a few years to more than ten.  It is a long journey sometimes.

Keep in mind that when your claim is assigned to a rater, the rater may still have other claims he/she is working on and they may start a new claim before starting on your claim.  I have seen multiple claims at a raters desk and in their cubicle.

You can also get in idea of how many claims are backed up at your regional office by looking here: https://www.benefits.va.gov/REPORTS/detailed_claims_data.asp#Reports

and then look for the date you want in 2020, then on the last page of the report that opens up is the listing by Regional office workload.

Last year the VA implemented some significant process changes. Before the changes, you were stuck at a single VARO for the most part. If they were backed up, it took that much longer. After the changes, they would out of a centralized national work queue. Claims get assigned out to different VARO's who have availability. It appears to be working to some extent to alleviate the unnecessarily long wait times. Keep in mind that appeals to the BVA do not work out of that queue and still take a very long time.
