Here is the deal.  "If" you withdraw, its exceptionally difficult to build that bridge back again, after you have burned that bridge down.

However, lets say you want to try going back to work.  Good.  Do that.  Then "AFTER 12 months", and you have made money, the VA could try to reduce you.  Or, they may not.  Dont do anything fraudulent or illegal, of course, but simply report to VA that you have earned income for the past 12 months.  Then, you can let them do their thing...and that may be "nothing".

You see, disability compensation is paid "in arrears" not in advance.  You are not required to tell VA,

"Im thinking about going back to work".  Ok, Im thinking of winning the lottery, also, but let's wait and see if both of these things happen.  Let's wait until we get the checks on both of these first.  I dont recommend running out and spending your future paychecks or your lottery winnings until you ger the checks.

ONLY after you have worked 12 months, then report it.  The term is "unable to maintain SUBSTANTIAL GAinful Employment".   And, SGE is defined as earning more than the poverty level in the past year.

So, unless you have earned "more" than the poverty level during the PAST 12 months, dont worry yourself.

Social Security has something similar.  I think its called "back to work" program.  You go back to work, and they even let you keep your disability ..for a while.  But, if you are able to "maintain" SGE, then you should definately report it.

You dont need to report to the VA you cut the neighbors grass and he gave you 20 bucks.  That isnt SGE.

Dont lie, but you dont have to tell VA "you may, in the future" go back to work.  If you do, great!!!

But, if you are not able to keep up with work..for more than a year, well your doc was right and you are unable to maintain SGE.
