My wife got her Social Security Check today and it was for $ 184 more than last months. We have received no information or correspondence and don't want to stir up a hornets nest either. Its also to soon for COLA although we were pretty sure pretty sure it will not be much more than 21 dollars for the COLA.

In short, yes they can, UNLESS you file the appropriate paperwork immediately after they notify you of the problem.

One disadvantage of having a SSA/VA direct deposit is that you have pre-authorized them to make deductions from the direct deposit account in order to "correct errors". If other accounts exist in the same bank, they may be hit as well.

Pete,

If you don't question it and spend the money, can SSA come back on you later

(if it's their mistake) to make you repay it or deduct it from future checks?
