Question

I live in the Northern Virginia area outside of DC where the cost of living is a bit high. I have been looking at the pay charts for SC'd disability at 100% and being TDIU. How do you ladies and gentleman get by on this compensation and not being able to work?

No pay will be enough to compensate for our disabilities. If you are 100% VA and receiving an average from SS, you should be doing fine financially. It is around 50k to 60k tax free, which is equivalent to around 70 plus if you would work and pay taxes. Bottomline is that this amount is OVER the poverty level in the US. Yes we have no savings or investment, never gonna be rich, but never gonna be poor either.

Some vets actually don't like to talk about their finances.

Some vets like myself, are single with kids, and have no means for additional income versus the married vets on the same chart.

Count your blessings. No one wants to be disabled.

We move to a lower cost area. The problem arises when you already live in such an area. SSA or SSDI may pay ongoing day to day expenses, but not pay for home repairs, unexpected medical costs, etc. It takes both SSDI and VA comp. to really cover things. I really need to buy a more expensive house, and knock down the none home assets.

Parts of North Florida are still reasonable.

Hey if you get SSD and 100% from the VA that is usually over $4000 a month. You can use VA loan to buy a house. The more rural the area the cheaper the house. The deep south and midwest are probably the cheapest places to live. Florida used to be cheap but no longer.
