Have you checked ANYwhere else, other than the NPRC?

Did you know that the Veterans Affairs Dept. ALSO has a record center in St. Louis?

And, as has been pointed out, the individual units most have a web prescence, and most of these websites are "helped out" if not downright sponsored by the US Government.

Then there is the branch of service wherein you served.

Believe it or not, even after my having been told NUMEROUS times that my records from me being treated at Balboa Navy Hospital in the '60's no longer existed.

Come to find out not only did they have my medical records, there at Balboa, but they even had MY X-RAYS.

So, that is another route for you to investigate.............and, another, if you are Navy, and that is the ship's logs........there are LOTS of records out there, they just aren't in one place.

Yes, my father did. He had his dd214 showing he was a Military police officer in WW2. His Medical records were burned up at the St. Louis Record center. I put a claim in for him for hearing loss and tinitus. I took the hearing exam with any medical records and was given 40% hearing and 10% tinitus. They gave him the benifit of the doube because of his MOS without the Medical records. So I guess you can say yes it can be done in certain cirumstances.

Yes I have all my DD214s That is intact. The service medical records is what they are saying they do not have.

so no one has been sc the first try unless they have medical records is that what you are saying. wow

it depends on what the claim is for for many of us like PTSD claims none of us ever sought treatment in the military for it so the SMR would not have any bearing on the claim anyway there would be no evidence that would help us, now if it is pertaining to a back injury or knee problems etc then yes you will probably need to get the records if you were hospitalized and the base hospital might have inpatient records you might try contacting the hospital directly for any and all records they might have usually hopsital records are not put into a SMR and are kept seperately if the base has been shut down then you will be on a new hunt to find out where they sent those records for storage but as we all know they keep everything some place it's just a matter of finding out where I was told they didn't have any records of an assault that took place in Feb 1975 in Alaska at Fort Wainwright well the hospital at Fort Wainwright is still open and they had copies of my in patient records and x rays and the DA JAG Clerk found the copies of the 4 general court martials of the men who attacked me and robbed me records can be found you just have to think beyond your personal SMR think outside the box

Yes the smr will show that i was treated for depression not ptsd which i have both on my claim. So i guess as you said they are not going to be as important as they say. they will come into play for the other things i claimed which i was treated for.

I thank you for that info.
