Vamc Medical Care Based On Discharge

Hello everyone,

A friend asked me a question regarding his father and medical treatment he might be able to get from the VA. His father served in the early 1980's as a motor pool mechanic for about three or four years in various places, including Puerto Rico. His father refuses to tell us the kind of discharge he received. His father lived a rowdy life back then, including alcohol and drug problems, so my friend has a feeling it could be a dishonorable discharge. Aside from being overweight, his father has been having some serious abdominal pain with blood in his urine and stool. His father did mention being diagnosed with Chron's a few years ago. Would he be able to receive any type of care at the VAMC or VAMC emergency department with that kind of discharge?

Thanks

Medical care, probably but it depends on the discharge. In order to be considered a 'veteran' he must have, among other things, been discharged with a characterization of at least "other than dishonorable".

Probably bad conduct discharge or LTH discharge. To get dishonorable you have to do something really bad and criminal.

For instance, murdering civilians and getting caught at it.

Vync,

Haven't I taught you the basics ?

Why would you possibly waste 2 minutes on this.

Vet won't give up any info - don't go out of your way for even one minute -

it isn't worth it.

If he decides to have a change of heart - help him all you can.

UNTIL THEN - it's obvious he does not want his hornets nest disturbed.
