Medication taken for depression or depressive symptoms can affect virility, as can heavier doses of pain medication. Depression itself can contribute to ED as well.

(I AM NOT A RATER- I work the claims BEFORE they are rated, annotating medical evidence in your records, VA and Legal documents,  and DA/DD forms- basically a paralegal/vso/etc except that I also evaluate your records based on Caluza and try to justify and schedule the exams that you go to based on whether or not your records have enough in them to warrant those)

The most popular anti-depressants (SSRI's) are known by all to cause sexual dysfuntion in men and woman. When the VA puts you on some prozac-like drug expect problems. Probably 80% of PTSD vets get put on these meds. This really helps a marriage that may already be on rocky ground. The drug (cymbalta) which is used by many doctors for pain have the same results as do all narcotics.

I am rated at 30% for MDD and my VA psych has presribed cialis for me for well over a year. I haven't put in a claim for EDD, but am thinking about it. It falls under SMC correct? Do you have to get the same statement from a Doc that it is more/most likely due to your SC MDD?? I wonder how they do a C&P on this condition?? USMCMan001, sorry to jump in on your topic, but I figured these might answer some of your questions also.

We kept our promise and served honorably. Now it is time for the VA to keep their's!

They basically put you in a room w/a dvd player and some XXX rated movies, just like they would a sperm donor. If that doesn't work, they have a patch/electrode that they stick on your testicles and another on your penis and they give you a couple of very low voltage electrical shocks, to see if they can get it to rise. If that doesn't work you get the SMC "k" award. It's really quite painless. Okay, now seriously, they check your diagnoses and blood work, for other causes and if there are none they take your word for it. No movies, no shocks!!! Sorry!

You had me intrigued there for a moment, but then I realized the VA would probably have black and white XXX movies from the 50's LOL

Hate to break your bubble, but they usually give you a prostate exam to check for enlargement putting pressure on other things, and to check for infections. They ask a lot of questions about your sexual (or not) history), and do a blood lab or two. SMC may or may not be a factor. In my case, I have ED but it was originally granted for nerve impingement and premature ejaculation due to my spine. Now its progressed to 'no go' and I have levitra for that, but I was denied SMC because when I was prescribed levitra the doc didn't say it was for 'non-existant' erections. I take zoloft for prematurity, but after it was prescribed I started seeing a MH practitioner for depression. She said keep taking it for it's MH effects. SO, I take zoloft for MH 'now', but was prescribed it 'then' for another condition. Its a fun mess.

SMC isn't always a given depending on the situation.
