Question On Fatalities At Ft Hood

I am wondering if those on active duty at Ft Hood,

that were killed, will be viewed by DOD

(and/or VA, for benefits for their families)

and considered as a death due to a hostile enemy action.

I think it should be.

The only one that be being deemed a Hero is the Civilian Cop who shot back.

She should get some sort of medal.

It seems that if a soldier dies on active duty his/her spouse would be entitled to:

SGLI $400, 00 payment

Dependent education Assistance Spouse and child(ren) Chapter 35

Burial (through military services)

DIC plus additional for under aged children

Tricare Spouse and child(ren)

Medals are nice and they can be shined but they don’t pay the rent or buy food and clothes or even help you with seeing a doctor. So does it really matter if they are awarded medals or benefits that will actually help them try to survive? I know no amount can do that but I think it is a start.

If you put DIC and the life insurance into context in our present society it is not a fortune. The 400,000 will pay off the mortgage and buy a new car. The DIC is not enough to support one individual much less a family. If a spouse with 3 kids is going to live on DIC she/he will have to get a job. The DIC will pay for day care. If the surviving spouse marries again before a certain age she/he will lose DIC. So a 24 year old widow can't remarry or she loses DIC as I understand it. What about the mothers of the 19-20 year olds? Do they get DIC. I don't think they do. I don't think getting killed on active duty is a real bargain.

CAalie, that is a really good question. I guess it depends on the way the fatalities are classified since it is from a Terrorist attack.

It would be based on the report.

I will keep an eye out.

Maybe I am sort of local but there was a soldier who picked up a wounded Sgt and ran him out of line of fire and got his boot hit. A woman dragged a wounded soldier out of hallway into a cubbie and shielded her with her body. These are the heroes I am thinking about including the soldier who went into the bldg twice and recovered wounded.
