VFW Will Defeat Bachmann Plan

WASHINGTON (January 28, 2011) — America's oldest and largest major combat veterans' organization announced it will do everything within its power to defeat a plan introduced by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) to cut $4.5 billion from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"No way, no how, will we let this proposal get any traction in Congress," said Richard L. Eubank, the national commander of the 2.1 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.

On her website, the three-term congresswoman lists more than $400 billion in suggestions to cut federal spending. The VA suggestion would cap increases to VA healthcare spending, and reduce disability compensation to account for Social Security Disability Insurance payments — in other words, an offset. She says her plan is intended to generate discussion.

"The only discussion the VFW wants is to tell the congresswoman that her plan is totally out of step with America's commitment to our veterans," said Eubank, a retired Marine and Vietnam combat veteran from Eugene, Ore.

"There are certain things you do not do when our nation is at war, and at the top of that list is not caring for our wounded and disabled servicemen and women when they return home," he said. "I want the congresswoman to join us in a tour of the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and Poly Trauma Center the next time she's in her home district to witness firsthand the great work the VA does every day to heal their wounds and ease their pain. Then I want her to look those disabled veterans in the eye and tell them their service and sacrifice is too expensive for the nation to bear.

"The day this nation can't afford to take care of her veterans is the day this nation should quit creating them," said Eubank.

I really think Michelle Bachmann is trying - I sent her $$ for her campaign and she is doing what she said she would. The SSA moneys that we sent into the system were paid out log ago. Even last year's SS and Medicaid $$$ I send in are paid out already. There was never a guarantee about receiving two disability incomes. The VA has its system for veterans and the SSI has a system for everybody - and I think Military/SSC disabilities should be excluded from being able to be compensated for by the SS system. The amount of income provided is not much, but it is honest.

And yes, I could have been a contender,er..working a nice job with an established career path making some "big bucks" but that is not me, I served many years in the military and am broken - not as bad as some, and maybe worse than others, but I did not take the corporate path, I took the military path as did many others.

All of this budget cutting stuff is real. There is not enough production now in this country to pay for ALL of the people consuming gov't paychecks-even if ALL of the corporate profits and ALL of the "rich" peoples assets were to be confiscated for gov't spending. Short of a "magic" pill bestowing unlimited energy and resources, a diminished lifestyle MUST occur from those who are not currently producing. Our parents and their politicians started this slide in individual independence and we did nothing to STOP it, instead, we elected politicians whose main policy was/is to throw more money at it and hope that solves it. When cash flow was exceeded, well "borrow" then call it "seed money" or "investment" and keep right on spending. When producers started to balk, well change government and societal norms to give "gains" for things that real negative economic results such as "green this and green that", "diversity" to the point where "less than the highest/best" is able to be promoted and inefficiently spindle company/gov't assets and resources, taking competition out of the schools and school sports as a mechanism to equalize all and remove the ability to discern between the talented and the untalented and on and on and on. A lot of societal issues here and they have all been made possible by spending without constraint. When Ross Perot was talking about taking on this situation, including social security , while the gov't and ECONOMY was still strong, he was ridiculed (and I was too because I liked his approach). Well now, that ridicule is returning to our generation that lives beyond our means, we've indebted the country beyond any ability to pay off the debt (unless fiat currency is used), and coddle people complaining that they want continued benefits even when there is no money to pay them.

PS. I hate AARP's lobbying, they repeated lobby for legislature that wants an elderly generation to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars of health care (per person) have the young(er) workers in the USA pay for it so that they can keep their assets and give them to their families. Another way, they want to consume our resources and keep theirs to give to who they want to.

Oh, and the USA jobs are going away because it is cheaper to build machines that will work 24/7 than to pay undereducated, entiltlement minded, overpaid American labor. When the machines have not been developed yet, the highly educated overseas populaces are more than willing to produce more with less cost than us-they might not invent it, but they sure do produce it!

That concludes the opine for today.

I read in the news that some hedge fund manager made 4 billion dollars by betting against the housing market. I am not even sure he paid tax on this money. All this corruption and graft and politicians are worried about veterans being overpaid. What is wrong with a system where people who contribute nothing of value except to make bets on the Wall Street casino can walk away with billions, and disabled vets who sacrifice all get by on peanuts?

I served my country and became disabled! I also worked and paid into the Social Security System! If they were going to deny my SSD benefits then they shouldn't have taken those payments out of my check! I did not cause the governement to become overwhelmed with debt! Starting wars with other countries, tax breaks for the rich, unneccessary government programs and spending, etc... have placed this country in all the turmoil it is in. And all of this stuff about the American people are in debt with this trillion dollar deficit, is BS. If I'm not mistaken, I don't know anyone who has received a bill from the government saying "You owe X amount of dollars" to pay down the deficit.

Elected officials don't care about what the American people want, all they care about is keeping their Goverment jobs, pay and benefits. If they truly listened to the American people, we wouldn't be in all of this mess! All the elected officials do is run attack ads and tell lie's about whomever they are running against. It all boils down to who we like personally. Not their experiences, their beliefs or their policies.

Don't you like how she basically is opening this up for discussion.(so she says) She is trying to get her name out in the front. Then she will turn around and say she is in agreement with the majority of voters and take a stand for vets. Wishy/ washy. She has existed on farm subsidies and also reaped the benefits of private school funding, and has the gaul to mess with veterans benefits, Shame on her.

Also in examining her bio on the net she does have aspirations of running for the Presidency. Tea party candidate??

She was a democrat and switched to republican. She is out to make waves in a turbulent storm.

How about less spending to foreign countries?

Keep the money and jobs in America!

Ronald Regan was a democrate and switched to Republican, perhaps the best President in the 20Th Century.. but don't really see what party has to do with the discussion.

I'm not talking about that tax bill, if we work, we pay taxes, that's a given. I'm talking about a general bill that says you owe money because the government spent it all!

    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
    • Welcome to hadit!

There are certain rules about community care reimbursement, and I have no idea if you met them or not.  Try reading this:

      https://www.va.gov/resources/getting-emergency-care-at-non-va-facilities/

However, (and I have no idea of knowing whether or not you would likely succeed) Im unsure of why you seem to be so adamant against getting an increase in disability compensation.

When I buy stuff, say at Kroger, or pay bills, I have never had anyone say, "Wait!  Is this money from disability compensation, or did you earn it working at a regular job?"  Not once.  Thus, if you did get an increase, likely you would have no trouble paying this with the increase compensation.

However, there are many false rumors out there that suggest if you apply for an increase, the VA will reduce your benefits instead.

That rumor is false but I do hear people tell Veterans that a lot.  There are strict rules VA has to reduce you and, NOT ONE of those rules have anything to do with applying for an increase.

Yes, the VA can reduce your benefits, but generally only when your condition has "actually improved" under ordinary conditions of life.

Unless you contacted the VA within 72 hours of your medical treatment, you may not be eligible for reimbursement, or at least that is how I read the link, I posted above. Here are SOME of the rules the VA must comply with in order to reduce your compensation benefits:

    • Good question.

Maybe I can clear it up.

The spouse is eligible for DIC if you die of a SC condition OR any condition if you are P and T for 10 years or more.  (my paraphrase).

      More here:

      Source:

      https://www.va.gov/disability/dependency-indemnity-compensation/

NOTE:   TO PROVE CAUSE OF DEATH WILL LIKELY REQUIRE AN AUTOPSY.  This means if you die of a SC condtion, your spouse would need to do an autopsy to prove cause of death to be from a SC condtiond.    If you were P and T for 10 full years, then the cause of death may not matter so much.
