Question

I'm still active duty with a discharge date coming up in the near future. To get my tinnitus documented in my records do I just need to make an appointment with my PCM about it? I plan to file it as a secondary to mental disorder.

I have tinnitus and I also have migraines due to my mental disorder. I'm not sure if I can make tinnitus my secondary if i have migraines as my secondary. can I have 2 secondaries?

I've told mental health about the ringing ears and migraines. How do I make sure this stuff has been documented? Do I need to tell my PCM?

you don't have to file this as a secondary claim. tinnitus stands by itself and its rating is 10% if its constant.

I would recommend next time you have an auditory appointment and have your ears tested, inform the individual that is performing the test that you have ringing in your ears.

When you come closer to getting out you will be required to have a phase 1 and phase 2 physical. Within those 2 phases you will have a hearing exam you can inform them.

I don't see the military or the VA tying a mental disorder to tinnitus ... but as was stated it can be claimed as a stand alone disease.. however, you are going to need to show that you have an MOS that lead to the tinnitus. Keep in mind tinnitus as a stand alone is usually caused by head injury or exposure to constant noise, ( doesn't have to be loud noise), so your Military Job is a consideration for an award of tinnitus. Tinnitus is often followed by loss of hearing. In cases were your are rated for loss of hearing an award of tinnitus is almost always granted if requested... Keep in mind there is no medical test for tinnitus, the VA is basically granting the Veteran the benefit of the doubt because no one can prove that they have it.

In my case, I spent 6 years in the Infantry, then another 10 years in Computer rooms, I was granted hearing loss and tinnitus in 2003 based on a statement made by a VA doctor after I gave my military job history and described my symptoms...and was diagnosed with a hearing loss. I had fought for service connection off and on since 1986, so get a diagnoses and medical statement before you get out of service because it could be a long time before you can prove it was caused during service.

Under what medical rationale do you feel that your Tinnitus and Migraines, are secondary

to your "mental disorder" ?

Is your "mental disorder" currently diagnosed and being treated while you are still on active duty ?

If yes, what is your "mental disorder" diagnosis ?

Are you RX'd medications for your "mental disorder" ?

If yes, what medications ?

If yes, are side effects noted (with use of these medications) to possibly cause Tinnitus and/or Migraines ?

I am rated 10% for tinnitus. You go to the audioliology department to have it documented. When you have a hearing test, they will either ask you or be sure you tell them. Tinnitus/hearing loss are often present together, tho you can have one without the other.
