My son has 19.5 years in the AF and is being medical board retired due to his depression. He was told his VA rating would be deducted from his RETIREMENT,and that part would not be taxed. So I am asking for him, is this true? Also is there any suggestions on what he should go about this. I have told him to get copies of all his med records even from his private Dr.

ANY help would be appreciated.

thanks, worried dad

Jbasser is correct... he might be eligible for CRSC as well as CRDP and could chose the most favorable program.

Lots of info here:

And Mil.com has discussions in their forums on these benefits:

http://www.dfas.mil/retiredmilitary/disability/payment.html

Does he have a copy of his LOD yet?

Does he have a PEBLO?

Is he still in the PEB/MEB process?

Has the PEBLO or anyone on his base helped him file a VA claim yet?

Can he access us at hadit from where he is at?

Hollis,

The new policy that just went into effect, states that if your son is found to be 50% or more Service Connected disabled thru the VA, he will automatically collect both. He will not have to apply for it. Now if the VA finds him less than 50% service connected than he will take the higher of the two retirements. The good thing about VA money is that it is Tax free, and does not show up as income anywhere. Unlike me, I am 80% SC thru VA, and 30% medically retired thru the Navy, but Medical Retirees like me can not collect both, unless we apply for Combat related, and receive concurrent. I have a claim with the Navy now, to collect both. I hope this helps you bud. Good luck to your son, and he is very lucky to have a father who truly cares.

Hollis , will; he be able to make the 20 year mark before the MEB goes through......?

Or is his disability combat related?

This is the most recent DFAS info I can find.

CRDP is automatic with a ten year phase in , as explained in this chart:

http://www.dfas.mil/...comparison.html

That is a retro 'phase in' for retirees who have received CRDP for ten years.....as I understand it.

If my understanding is wrong , please explain to us someone,

so that we have the most accurate info here we can get. Thanks.
