Hearing Aid Denied

Rate this question

Question

The VA just denied me my hearing aid because they think my hearing is normal and its not the haring that is giving me a headache and making me hard to focus and study. The VA told me they think I need to go mental health route due to my mild cognitive impairment and PTSD (lack of sleep and stress). They told me my current condition is worse than me wearing hearing aid so they told me to go seek more mental health therapy.

Is this a good thing for my claim? I mean I am little sad that my injuries are giving me all these trouble, but I would like to get what I deserve so I can improve my life.

Thank you

*** AUDIOLOGY/CRS Has ADDENDA ***
Auditory Processing Disorder evaluation:
Complaints: Despite normal hearing sensitivity and good word recognition,
patient experiences difficulty listening and staying focused.
- hard to listen to radio from the right ear.
- didn't do well in school becaues too hard to read and focus
on lectures.
- noisy environments give patient a headache
- poor memory, forgetful, patient had SLP consult but
declined to continue therapy
- loses focus easily so difficult to follow instructions
- also reports high levels of stress and insomnia, both of
which have been documented in other reports
- SLP therapy and sleep study have been postponed because
patient is unwilling or unable to change behavoir
(i.e. use smartphone and sleep without guns)
Today's testing is to determine the presence and extent of auditory
processing issues, and to determine if patient is good candidate for
amplification and/or remote mic technology.
Results:
Otoscopy: Right ear: clear view of eardrum
Left ear: clear view of eardrum
Earphones used: supra aural headphones
Test reliability: good
Results:
Frequency Tone Patterns (normal = 75%)
AU @ 60 dBHL: 32%
Compressed Word Recognition Test (normal = 72%):
AD @ 60 dBHL: 24%
AS @ 60 dBHL: 24%
Words in Noise Test:
AD @ 80 dBHL: 22.8 dBSNR profound
AS @ 80 dBHL: 17.2 dBSNR severe
QuickSIN:
AU @ 70 dBHL: 15.0 dBSNR (severe impairment)
Impressions:
Page 21 of 94 - Extreme difficulty on all tests, indicating a more global
pathology rather than purely auditory.
Patient education: discussed results with patient, he is willingly to try
amplification and remote technology. This clinician will contact the
patient after discussing his case with colleagues to determine
Audiology services appropriate for patient.
Follow-up: Will contact patient after discussion with colleagues.

04/29/2014 ADDENDUM STATUS: COMPLETED
After discussing with colleagues, it was determined that patient is not a good
candidate for amplification/remote technology at this time. Results from testing
on 4/25/2014 do not indicate an auditory processing disorder but rather a global
or cognitive issue that may benefit from other forms of therapy.
Called patient and informed him of this decision. Answered his questions about
this decision. Patient may return to Audiology in the future if his hearing
worsens.

I will tell you the main difference I have noted with my hearings aids the VA provided. I can hear birds again. I also can hear a lot of things I did not hear before at higher frequencies including my wife.

Same here! I must have said "what?" 50X a day. Now I only say "what?" a handful of times. It's amazing to put them in each morning and immediately hear the birds outside the window. What a difference...

You get hearing aids and glasses at 10 percent service connected.

J

They denied my hearing aids, but they did give me some type of glasses that supposed to reduced my headache. Is that mean I will be getting 10% for my eyes?
