Eyeglasses

I read the topic about eyeglasses but In can't ask a question there because it is closed. I received a hearing aid 2 months ago from the VA and am now scheduled to go to Augusta for eyeglasses. I have to take a sick day from work and drive 200 miles. I also have to pay the $50 copay for seeing a specialist so here's my question. I have read that the VA pays $71 for glasses. I know that my hearing aid costs $2000+ on the open market so I wonder if the $71 fee is comparable for glasses? In other words does the VA get a huge discount because they buy so many?

thanks

They do get a huge discount. If you consider your time and costs it would be wiser to get glasses locally. They do give a pretty good examination with a real Doc in Dallas.

If it were me in your shoes I would go to a local place that is competitive.

Good Luck

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

Raven: Been getting my specs at VA since 2009. Probably the most comprehensive Eye Exam I've ever had. As for the Glasses themselves, judgement call. Probably worth your while if you can fit it into your schedule when you take into consideration the level of care afforded by the VA. I've never paid any attention, wonder if Saturday appointments are available.

Your not SC, what was the basis for the free Hearing Aids?

Gastone - you don't need to be service connected, for hearing loss, to receive hearing aids, from the VA. Also the VA will replace hearing aids once the warranty expires. One of my vets just had his dog eat his and they replaced them, at no cost.

Glasses should be replaced every year, by the VA. I use Medicare to pay for my exams, when I get private exams. I also get glasses and exams from the VA.

VA replaces my aids every 4 years and Denver VAMC sends me the batteries 6 month supply! but ya have to order them, when you get them they place a blue card in the package its an order form for your batteries.

I had always thought veteran had to be SC too! but not actually getting comp.. and 100% to receive eye Glasses and Dental.
