Va Tested My Hearing And Provided Hearing Aids, But....

Question

Does that necessarily mean I will get rated for it if it is deemed to be service related? I have hearing test from sub school in my record that was submitted with claim. I separated in 1995 and have not worked in a loud environment or been subjected to loud noises since separation. I also have significant tinnitus. Hearing tests substantiated my tinnitus as well. I was on subs and believe the pressure and pressure changes along with various noises are to blame. Anyway, does having enough hearing loss to require the use of hearing aids necessarily mean I will be rated for hearing loss? I feel like I will probably get rated for tinnitus. Just not sure how significant hearing loss has to be before you get rated for it assuming it is deemed to be service related.

There is no way to tell you if you will be rated for HL without a copy of your hearing test. You can get a copy of it at the FOIA office at the VA hospital. You will probably get 10% for tinnitus.

I am considered to have severe hearing loss in R ear, yet I am 0% for hearing loss, and 10% for Tinnitus. I know a lot of Vets that have Hearing Aids in both ears, and are 0% SC. Just my experience, you really never know bud. Good luck and God Bless!!!

§4.85 Evaluation of hearing impairment. (FOR COMPENSATION)

(a) An examination for hearing impairment for VA purposes must be conducted by a state-licensed audiologist and must include a controlled speech discrimination test (Maryland CNC) and a puretone audiometry test. Examinations will be conducted without the use of hearing aids.

(b) Table VI, “Numeric Designation of Hearing Impairment Based on Puretone Threshold Average and Speech Discrimination,” is used to determine a Roman numeral designation (I through XI) for hearing impairment based on a combination of the percent of speech discrimination (horizontal rows) and the puretone threshold average (vertical columns). The Roman numeral designation is located at the point where the percentage of speech discrimination and puretone threshold average intersect.

© Table VIa, “Numeric Designation of Hearing Impairment Based Only on Puretone Threshold Average,” is used to determine a Roman numeral designation (I through XI) for hearing impairment based only on the puretone threshold average. Table VIa will be used when the examiner certifies that use of the speech discrimination test is not appropriate because of language difficulties, inconsistent speech discrimination scores, etc., or when indicated under the provisions of §4.86.

(d) “Puretone threshold average,” as used in Tables VI and VIa, is the sum of the puretone thresholds at 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 Hertz, divided by four. This average is used in all cases (including those in §4.86) to determine the Roman numeral designation for hearing impairment from Table VI or VIa.

(e) Table VII, “Percentage Evaluations for Hearing Impairment,” is used to determine the percentage evaluation by combining the Roman numeral designations for hearing impairment of each ear. The horizontal rows represent the ear having the better hearing and the vertical columns the ear having the poorer hearing. The percentage evaluation is located at the point where the row and column intersect.

(f) If impaired hearing is service-connected in only one ear, in order to determine the percentage evaluation from Table VII, the non-service-connected ear will be assigned a Roman Numeral designation for hearing impairment of I, subject to the provisions of §3.383 of this chapter.

(g) When evaluating any claim for impaired hearing, refer to §3.350 of this chapter to determine whether the veteran may be entitled to special monthly compensation due either to deafness, or to deafness in combination with other specified disabilities.

(h) Numeric tables VI, VIA*, and VII.

Note veterans that show hearing loss tested from a VA Audiologist may receive hearing aids with 0%rating SC OR NOT SC.

I think Veteran can get H-Aids if he/she shows a loss of hearing rather or not he/she is SC at 0% or not SC.

To be compensated for hearing loss the veteran must show the H-Loss was from military service prior to discharge.

A presumptive maybe establish for noise induce hearing loss (for service connected purpose) while in the military with SMR's.

Hearing induce hearing loss may occur over time ''years''& the veteran must meet the VA Required Criteria FOR % of Compensation.

Thanks for all the replies. I submitted a copy of my hearing test that the Navy performed when I was in sub school. I was tested by the VA in June '13 and received Hearing Aids. I was tested again for my C&P exam. They have something to compare to anyway with my original exam from my time in the Navy. Only time will tell. Just completed my last C&P exam this past week and now I wait for results. Examiner said Tennessee has been quick to turn cases around I could expect results sooner rather than later. Hope to hear in the next month. Glad to have the resources this site offers and so many other vets to share experiences with.
