Jet Fuel and Heart Disease

Rate this question

Joe Giambrone

Question

I was in the Navy for 19672 and worked on the flight deck the entire time breathing in jet fuel . I recently file a claim with the VA for Cardiovascular Disease which they acknowledged I have but denied me benefits stating it was associated with my Military service. I know of one case that was granted from 2014 Docket # 14-06-647 . Does any one know of any other cases.

@shrekthetank1, the reference did not come through.

@Joe Giambrone, you need to go the http://search.uscourts.cavc.gov/ and search for jet fuel under key words.  This gives you a list of all COVA decisions on jet fuel.  One of these might have what you are looking for, select the cases on the view option.

When I entered jet fuel and cardiovascular disease at the CVA, I found no hits except for denials.  Instead I went to the BVA search site and got hits on jet fuel and heart disease.

Go to https://www.index.va.gov/search/va/bva.jsp and search for:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9098949 <-<-- published report about jet fuel exposure and multiple diseases.

The Veteran’s representative, in December 2018, submitted data from the National Research Council and a report from the National Academy of Sciences Journal, which suggested a possible link between jet fuel exposure and the aforementioned disabilities. The articles, while providing a possible link between jet fuel exposure, do not provide evidence to support a nexus between the Veteran’s specific disabilities and his probable exposure to jet fuels in service. <<-- statement by the BVA.  Document number -->> DOCKET NO. 15-16 418  DATE:    February 12, 2019

(b.) For each heart disability diagnosed, is it at least as likely as not (50% or greater probability) that such disability was either incurred in or otherwise related to the Veteran’s military service, to include exposure to jet fuel? Please explain why. As appropriate, the medical article submitted the Veteran should be discussed. An opinion that relies solely on the absence of medical treatment during or after service will not be deemed adequate. <<-- remand by the BVA.  Document number -->>  DOCKET NO. 18-24 084   DATE:    May 21, 2019

Ten, for each such diagnosed heart disability, the examiner should render an opinion, consistent with sound medical judgment, as to whether it is at least as likely as not (i.e., a 50 percent or greater probability), that the disability had its onset in or is otherwise medically-related to service—to particularly include, the Veteran’s reported significant exposure to jet fuel fumes while serving in and around the flight deck aboard the USS Independence. <<-- remand by the BVA.  Document number -->> DOCKET NO. 15-24 065   DATE:    September 24, 2018

c)       Is it at least as likely as not that the Veteran's cardiac disability is caused by, or is otherwise related to exposure to aviation fuel during service?  In answering this question, the VA examiner is asked to address Dr. Wiegman's May 2011 statement that some studies have indicated a positive link between hydrocarbons found in jet fuel to the development of atherosclerotic heart disease.  If possible, the VA examiner should also discuss current medical literature on the relationship between exposure to hydrocarbons and/or aviation fuel and heart disease. <<-- remand by the BVA.  Document number -->>  DOCKET NO.  09-08 112
