What Justifies Medication?

Fire Courage

Question

I had an appointment with my primary care clinic this morning hoping I could get prescribed something for this anxiety, memory loss, and anger outbursts. Just something to help me function better on a daily basis. Last month for some strange reason the VA psychologist told me to follow up with my primary care clinic for any medication. But today my primary care doctor started to prescribed some medicine but changed her mind and didn't prescribe anything and told me she was going to get me back up to mental health.

After pouring my heart out and telling her all the things I am experiencing (which I can't discuss without becoming very emotional), she handed me a tissue and suggested that I go to a book store and read some "self help" books! Also, told me the door is always opened if I needed to come back. She made me another appointment to come back in 4 weeks to see her. If I don't get some help, I'm afraid I may lose my family. This is my second marriage. I want to do better. My family means everything to me. Anybody ever been told to go and read some self help books?

did she at least tell you the names of some "GOOD" books? Is there a vet center near you? You might get treated better there......but realize who I am giving you advice I have been married 5 times, 4 divorces and am 100% PTSD schedular so I know I am messed up multiple DUIs etc, so I have been down the bad road if there is something wrong to do, I have probably done it, I am experienced at screwing things up and the people here over the years have guided me down the "good road" I am now SMC S and in treatment for over 7 years now, I am still such a good interview tha Chief of Clinic still sees me 7 years into it, when he wants to give his residents a shock he lets them sit in on one of our one to one sessions. He can pass me off to one of the other psychiatrists, or the PTSD team, or a psychologist but he doesn't, when he learned my history I don't know who had harder problems with it, me or him. But I get good treatment so I am not complaining..... but really try the Vet clinic can you ask to see if you can get a new primamry care doc due to personality issues? Or are you going to a small VA clinic? I had one primary care doc I just could not get along with, I went to a patient rep and they arranged it. I have been treated great ever since then. I had one of the docs that felt at Vietnam era vets were nothing but drug seekers, and treated them like a piece of chit, I had to have a new doc, other wise I night have gone "postal" on him and that is saying a lot since I spent 20 years delivering mail I was good at going postal just ask any of my old superviors rofl

Psychologists typically do not write prescriptions. Sometimes VA primary care docs will write you something, but sometimes they tend to want to refer you to MH for a psychiatrist, who knows what to prescribe for each person's unique situation.

I did get something like xanex from my dentist at the VA, but that was because I have anxiety about seeing dentists. My jaw was royally screwed up my oral surgeons in the military and I am now in constant pain. This shows that clinics other than MH can write scripts for anxiety.

During my divorce, I saw a counselor for a couple of months. My primary care (non-VA) wrote me something to help me sleep and relax. They also recommended I read a Dr.Phil book: Relationship Rescue. I thought it was a totally stupid idea, because the author is a real loudmouth, but it really did help. There is a separate workbook, but it is not all that different from the book.

Thanks Vync! It seems to make more since when you spell it out that way. I am also going to the bookstore later today. Hopefully, this MH appointment will be soon.

Oh and I was cracking up on that "real loudmouth" statement! Too funny! B)

Thanks.

You need to see a psychiatrist who knows what he is doing. Drugs interact with each other and good shrinks know how this happens and what to avoid. I would not want a PCP handing out prozac.

Best of luck! I hope you are luckier than me and get a study scheduled in less than three months.

    • These decisions have made a big impact on how VA disability claims are handled, giving veterans more chances to get benefits and clearing up important issues.

      Service Connection

      Frost v. Shulkin (2017)
This case established that for secondary service connection claims, the primary service-connected disability does not need to be service-connected or diagnosed at the time the secondary condition is incurred 1. This allows veterans to potentially receive secondary service connection for conditions that developed before their primary condition was officially service-connected.

      Saunders v. Wilkie (2018)
The Federal Circuit ruled that pain alone, without an accompanying diagnosed condition, can constitute a disability for VA compensation purposes if it results in functional impairment 1. This overturned previous precedent that required an underlying pathology for pain to be considered a disability.

      Effective Dates

      Martinez v. McDonough (2023)
This case dealt with the denial of an earlier effective date for a total disability rating based on individual unemployability (TDIU) 2. It addressed issues around the validity of appeal withdrawals and the consideration of cognitive impairment in such decisions.

    • I met with a VSO today at my VA Hospital who was very knowledgeable and very helpful.  We decided I should submit a few new claims which we did.  He told me that he didn't need copies of my military records that showed my sick call notations related to any of the claims.  He said that the VA now has entire military medical record on file and would find the record(s) in their own file.  It seemed odd to me as my service dates back to  1981 and spans 34 years through my retirement in 2015.  It sure seemed to make more sense for me to give him copies of my military medical record pages that document the injuries as I'd already had them with me.  He didn't want my copies.  Anyone have any information on this.  Much thanks in advance.

    • Caluza Triangle defines what is necessary for service connection
Caluza Triangle – Caluza vs Brown defined what is necessary for service connection. See COVA– CALUZA V. BROWN–TOTAL RECALL

This has to be MEDICALLY Documented in your records:

Current Diagnosis.   (No diagnosis, no Service Connection.)

      In-Service Event or Aggravation.
Nexus (link- cause and effect- connection) or Doctor’s Statement close to: “The Veteran’s (current diagnosis) is at least as likely due to x Event in military service”

    • Do the sct codes help or hurt my disability rating
    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
