Bi-polar. Proving Sc.

Question

Recently I filed for PTSD and BP disorder. When I was on active duty I was sent to drug and alcohol rehab. When I got off of active duty I was diagnosed by a VA doctor with BP disorder. I visited him approximately 3-4 times, and later returned to active duty. I am wondering, how best to prove SC for the BP. I did see a psychiatrist while on AD and he presribed me Luvox. I am not sure why he prescribed me that medication. I think it may have been because of depression or suicidal ideation. This was more than 10 years ago.

When first diagnosed with BP disorder I still served in the National Guard.

Currently I am waiting on MEB due to my BP. I am again in the National Guard after an additional 6 years in the AD army.

You're going to have to get an IMO from a psychiatrist stating that your BP originated while you were in the service.

Thanks for the quick response Larry. What does IMO stand for?

Currently my therapist and psychiatrist from the VA are going to write a letter for me, stating the BP either started or was aggravated by my time on AD. I certainly believe it was, although what I believe does not really matter.

You have a solid claim with evidence and you need to file within 1 year of separation or it will get much harder.

alcohol and drugs are used by many with your diagnosis to self medicate.

Thanks Pete. I am in the process of getting the medical records of my time in Landsthual Hospital for the inpatient, 6 week rehab. Hopefully that will help out considerably. I did ask for an extension when I filed so that I could gather additional paperwork.

You could start reading BVA cases. I went to the BVA search engine and found over 10,000 cases that were granted. Clink on the link below and type in the in the phase “bipolar disorder is granted”. Include the quotation marks. Select all years and then enter.
